6 sustainable hiking tips

Many people have realized that hiking is an excellent way to discover Sweden. Increasing numbers are heading out onto forest trails and mountain expanses, in national parks and coastal meadows across the country. Here are six tips on how to hike more sustainably:

1. Stay on the plank walkway

The plank walkways keep your feet dry and also protects the ground. Use it—even if it might be in poor condition.

2. Wash dishes over dry land

Fetch water instead of washing dishes directly in the lake, sea, or stream. If you use dish detergent, make sure it is biodegradable. Pour the dishwater over the ground so that fewer chemicals and dirt end up in our waterways.

3. Take care of your toilet paper

A little toilet paper decomposes, right? Yes, but it takes a long time, and who wants to see toilet paper along the trails? And by the way, skip the wet wipes!

4. Show respect

Animals get stressed when people come close—this applies to everything from reindeer to small birds. Keep a good distance and stay calm!

5. Bring it back

Don’t carry anything with you that you don’t want to bring back home. Leave no trash or leftovers behind.

6. Be careful with fire

Be cautious when making open fires in nature. Choose a location where the fire cannot spread or damage the environment—preferably where there is already a fire pit. Never make a fire on the rocks, and remember to extinguish the fire and clean up afterward. Find out if there is a fire ban in the area you are in. Special regulations may apply in national parks and nature reserves.
