The accommodation’s home page: STF Abisko Turiststation

Near the very top of Mount Nuolja in Abisko National Park lies STF Aurora Sky Station. An excellent place to experience the northern lights and the midnight sun.

Step out onto the large outdoor terrace and viewing tower, offering sweeping views of Lapporten, Torneträsk and Abiskodalen. Indoors, a fireplace, café and souvenir shop await. There is also an exhibition about the northern lights, and during the evening presentations are held where you can learn more about the phenomenon and its history. In winter, dinners are also served (pre-book via Abisko Turiststation).

Aurora Sky Station is open until 01:00 in winter and 01:30 in summer.

Chairlift

To reach Aurora Sky Station, you take a chairlift that takes about 30 minutes. In winter, it is important to wear warm clothing. We recommend pre-booking your ticket. Drop-in tickets may also be available at the lower chairlift station, subject to availability.

See the northern lights

Aurora Sky Station is one of the world’s best places to experience the northern lights. Abisko is known as “the blue hole” because the sky here is often clear even when it is cloudy nearby, and the dark months are many. At Aurora Sky Station, you are also higher up, closer to the sky, which provides optimal conditions.

The northern lights can be seen from August to April, with the highest chances from mid-November to mid-March.

Tips for a winter visit

  • Dress warmly! You will spend time outdoors looking for the northern lights and standing still. Bring your warmest hat, your warmest gloves, something to keep your neck warm, and thermal base layers.
  • Headlamp with red light! To see the northern lights, you need to avoid light pollution while it is dark outside. A headlamp with a red light is recommended, allowing you to see where you are going while still enjoying the northern lights in the sky.

Midnight sun at Aurora Sky Station

From 25 May, the sun does not set in Abisko, remaining above the horizon until mid-July. This means bright days and a summer experienced as one long day.

Experience a guided midnight sun hike with a guide, from Aurora Sky Station (900 metres above sea level) to the summit of Nuolja (1,164 metres above sea level). From the top, a magnificent panoramic view awaits over Björkliden, Torneträsk, Lapporten and Abiskodalen in the soft, golden midnight sun. Shortly after midnight, the group returns to Aurora Sky Station, where you can relax on the terrace before heading down.
