About the accommodation

At the far end of the archipelago outside Umeå is Holmön and the archipelago of Holmöarna. There, at the end of the road by the cliffs and the sea, stands Bergudden lighthouse, full of history. A place for tranquility, reflection and proximity to nature.

Holmöarna are located ten kilometers out in the ocean outside Umeå and the mainland. The archipelago consists of several islands, the main one being Holmön. Today, Holmön is the only island in the Västerbotten archipelago that has a year-round resident population. It is a living area both summer and winter. The proximity to the sea shaped life on the island since the first people arrived and began working here centuries ago. Holmön also has a rich cultural and natural history. The city center, with its Bullerby feel, is well preserved and classified as a national interest along with its surrounding landscape. Holmöarna are also home to one of the largest marine nature reserves in Sweden, as well as the largest nature reserve in Västerbotten outside the mountain range. Truly a place to explore and experience. Many choose to stay long.

Farthest to the west, at the end of the road, is Bergudden lighthouse. For over 130 years, the lighthouse has alerted and guided seafarers on their way through the perilous waters of Norra Kvarken. Lighthouse keepers and their families have lived and worked here throughout its history. Today you can taste the lighthouse keeper life, exposed to the elements at Bergudden and see the sun set over the sea, the fog roll in or the light from the lighthouse dance on the waves of Norra Kvarken.

The unique location, far out at sea, also poses some challenges for you as a guest. The light keeper homes have no electricity or running water. The toilet is an outhouse, the kitchen is self-catering, and the shower is sea or a basin and a jug. Simplicity is the order of the day, allowing you to experience a different kind of luxury; the magical location and the power of nature right outside your window. An encounter with a place, with history and with nature.

Warmly welcome to the lighthouse keepers’ homes at Bergudden.

    Travel options
You can reach Holmön almost any day of the year. In summer, the Norrfjärden - Byviken route is operated by the ferry Capella from Färjerederiets. The ferry departs 5 times daily. The travel time is 40 minutes.

If the winter ice is thick enough, the Vintergatan hovercraft comes into service, allowing you to get to us on Holmön even in winter. Do note that weather, wind and the prevailing ice conditions can put a temporary stop to transportation.

To get to the ferry terminal in Norrfjärden, take the E4 north from Umeå. At Sävar's northern exit, turn off and follow the signs to Norrfjärden/Passbåt Holmön. The driving time from Umeå is 30-40 minutes by car. Parking at the ferry terminal is free of charge. The route Umeå - Norrfjärden is also served by bus line 118/171 for special departures. A current timetable can be found at Länstrafiken in Västerbotten (tabussen.nu). Then take the ferry from Norrfjärden further out to Holmön.

    How to find the lighthouse

Bergudden is the westernmost outpost of Holmön. From Byviken, the ferry terminal on the Holmö side, it is 3 km down to Bergudden and the lighthouse. Follow the local road past fields and meadows and turn off to take the road through the forest down to Bergudden and the lighthouse. A lovely journey to the destination. Follow the signs to Bergudden.

Please note that there are currently no taxis or public transports operating on Holmön. To get around - and to reach us - the best means of transport is a bicycle. Take your own bike on the ferry or rent one from Holmöns Båtmuseum when you arrive at the port (rental is also possible during the low season when the museum is closed).
