Upcoming renovation at STF Grövelsjön Mountain Station

In October 2026, the planned renovation of the shop, reception, and kitchen will begin. Until then, operations will continue as usual, and during the summer season of 2026 all facilities will remain fully open to guests.

About the accommodation

STF Grövelsjön Mountain Station is located 816 meters above sea level, at the top of the Dalarna mountains near the Norwegian border. From here, you have direct access to miles of hiking trails and ski tracks right outside the door.

Grövelsjön Mountain Station is the perfect base for anyone looking to hike or ski in a true mountain environment. There’s something for everyone — beginners, seasoned hikers, groups of friends, and families with children.

The station is beautifully situated at the foot of Långfjället with sweeping views of the Norwegian mountains. Several nature reserves and national parks with unique landscapes can be found on both the Norwegian and Swedish sides of the border.

STF Grövelsjön Mountain Station is one of the world’s most environmentally friendly mountain accommodations. It is certified by Green Key, the restaurant is KRAV-labeled, and only high-quality organic ingredients are used. We serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and are fully licensed.

We offer a range of accommodation options to suit different budgets and comfort levels. Choose between rooms with private bathrooms or shared facilities in the corridor. Full or half meal plans are available, or you can cook your own meals in our guest kitchen. In the main building, you’ll find a sauna, several lounges, a ping-pong room, and a playroom.

Travelling with a dog? We have a few rooms where pets are welcome, as well as a common lounge where you may bring your four-legged friend. Dogs are not allowed in other areas of the mountain station.

Grövelsjön Mountain Station has a well-stocked sports and grocery shop. Here you’ll find everything from provisions and outdoor gear to mountain maps, clothing, and first aid supplies. We also offer rental equipment for both summer and winter tours. If you wish to rent ski equipment, we recommend booking in advance.

As a guest at the mountain station, you can park free of charge. We also offer 6 charging stations for electric cars, which do not need to be booked in advance.

The location of the mountain station makes it unique, where you really have ski-in/ski-out to the mountain combined with good accommodation!

A sports break week with my two sons could not have been better. Children get to play, adults get to rest, and with your help, there was a solution for almost everything, and unlimited excursion destinations with just the right challenge were made available. It feels safe and well-organized.

Good starting point if you want to do day trips in the mountains. There are many nice hiking options. So nice to be able to combine the hike with comfortable accommodation and super good food. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We are very satisfied with the stay.

Travel information
STF Grövelsjön Mountain Station is located at the northernmost part of the Dalarna mountains, close to the Norwegian border, approximately 190 km from Mora.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Travel by train to Mora and then continue with Dalatrafiken, which operates daily bus services to Grövelsjön Mountain Station. During winter, Fjällexpressen runs all the way to Grövelsjön from Stockholm.

CAR
From Idre, follow road 70 and then road 1056 towards Grövelsjön. It is approximately 40 km from Idre to Grövelsjön Mountain Station. Parking and electric car charging stations are available.

We at STF Grövelsjön Fjällstation have been working on our environmental profile since 1990 and have repeatedly been recognized for our environmental work. We were one of the first eco-labeled mountain facilities and we are constantly looking for improvement opportunities to continue to reduce our climate footprint. Our goal is that our guests, both now and in the future, will experience unspoiled mountain nature. We therefore need to actively continue to work with sustainability and do so according to our philosophy, which is based on a combination of innovation and tradition.

Examples of what we do:
• Energy - since 1984, the mountain station's main source of heat has been bog and mountain heat. Our electricity purchases come from renewable energy sources. 
• Food - our restaurant is KRAV-certified, which is a guarantee for you as a guest that our staple foods are KRAV-labeled or organic. All meat is of Swedish origin, the reindeer meat is local from the area.
• Cleaning agents - all cleaning agents in daily work are eco-labeled.
• Waste management - we compress our waste in large presses to reduce the number of transports.

How you as a guest can help us:
• Travel climate-smart - this way you reduce emissions from your holiday. There is public transport that goes all the way to the entrance.
• Discover sustainably - respect the animals and nature, leave no human traces. By sticking to paths and fences, not leaving anything in nature and taking both your rubbish and what you find back down from the mountain, you can contribute to an unspoilt mountain nature.
• Choose local produce - when you shop with us and our neighbours, you support the local community.
• Electric car - as a resident of the mountain station, you park for free. We also have 6 places for charging electric cars. These do not need to be booked in advance.
