About the accommodation

Stay with the river and skiing trails right outside the door. The hostel is located in an area of great natural beauty in the Sälen Mountains, approximately 25 kilometres from Sälen. It is an excellent starting point for mountain hiking, fly fishing, cycling and skiing in the Sälen and Trysil region.

The hostel dates back to the 1850s and is located on Gräsheden – The Grass Heath. The first person to settle here worked as a gränsridare (border rider) and oversaw the border with neighbouring Norway.
 
The hostel offers practical and pleasant accommodation in double or multiple-bed rooms. There are washbasins and toilets in most rooms. Showers and a sauna are also available as well as a self-catering kitchen.
 
If you’d like to experience nature on foot, you can walk along one of the country’s longest hiking trails, which passes close to the hostel. Within an hour’s drive you can reach Sweden’s highest waterfall Njupeskär and most recent national park Fulufjället. The closest ski resort with maintained cross-country skiing tracks and ski slopes is ten kilometres away. Other mountain skiing facilities in the Sälen area can be reached within half an hour and STF Hostel Sälen is also well positioned for day trips to Trysil in Norway.
 
Nature conservation areas and nature reserves surround the hostel. The closest ski resort with prepared cross country tracks and ski slopes is 10 km away. The other mountain resorts in the Sälen area are within 30 minutes journey from the hostel. Wild game fishing and canoeing can be arranged on Görälven, only 300 m from the hostel. Courses in fly-fishing can also be arranged for groups. Other activities include “animals of prey weekends” guided by our knowledgeable trackers and nature guides, and fishing with a guide.

    How to find your way to Gräsheden and Sälen hostel:

    By car from the south
    Go straight through the roundabout just before you reach the village Sälen. Continue through the village and after about 20 kilometers at Fulunäs you turn left at signs for Hammar and Stöten. You find the hostel after 5 kilometers, on your left.

    By car from Oslo
    Take the E6 north, past Gardermoen towards Hamar. Just before Hamar, turn right road #3 towards Elverum and Trysil. Continue through Elverum and proceed towards road #25 Trysil. Follow road #25 past Östby duty station across the border towards Fulunäs

    From the North
    Follow road 311 through Sörsjön turning right at Fulunäs over the river continue 5km to Gräsheden.
