About the accommodation

The mountain is located at the northern shore of Lake Vaimok on the Nordkalott hiking trail between Kvikkjokk and Sulitelma. The water in Vaimok is among the clearest in Sweden, with a visibility of 17 metres. Anyone who dares to swim in this lake will need a good warm stove in the cabin afterwards.

If you want an overview of the surroundings, trot up the rocky path to Vajmok cliff. From here, look at Sulitelma to the west, Fierrovagges steep wall to the north and Staika’s two peaks to the south-east.

The area’s nearest lake is bare and rocky, but a few kilometres along the trail towards Pieskehaure, a verdant moor spreads out. Wolverine and the occasional Lapland owl are present.

During the summer, most outings take place at the north side of the lake, where the mountain cabin is located. Winter opens up unimaginable possibilities if you go skiing over the lake. Many nice and more difficult challenges await those who want to carve a few telemark turns. Weekend visits here in April are busy when the sun gets really warm. Lying on a reindeer skin with a jig rod and fishing up char on the lake then becomes popular.

A shortcut to Tarra Valley, if you can use a map and compass, is to walk through the unmarked landscape of the Fierrovagge Valley and down towards STF Såmmarlappa. It’s easy walking, but very good orienteering skills are needed when you reach the mountain forest before the Tarra River. A ferry over to STF Såmmarlappa is available.

At the mountain cabin you have no mobile coverage. Please note that you can only pay with cash at this mountain cabin. Paying with Swish or debit card will not be possible.

This is how it works in a mountain cabin
Our mountain cabins offer a simple and authentic stay in multi-bedded rooms with self catering. The rooms are different sizes with bunk beds and usually heated by gas stoves. On site you will be greeted by a cabin manager. As a guest you chop wood, fetch water from the stream or lake, wash up and clean up after youself.

STF Vaimok Fjällstuga is located along the Nordkalottleden trail, between STF Tarrekaise Fjällstuga and STF Pieskehaure Fjällstuga. Kvikkjokk and Sulitjelma in Norway are good starting points for a hike or ski trip to Vaimok. The distance from Kvikkjokk to Vaimok is about 45 km, slightly less from Sulitjelma. Do note that distances will vary depending on the season, as the summer and winter trails deviate slightly. Expect 2-3 days of hiking/skiing to Vaimok from both of these villages.
