About the accommodation

The mountain cabin is on the northern shore of Lake Akkajaure, in the Stora Sjöfallet National Park, on the road between Gällivare and Ritsem. It’s easy to take a one-day excursion up to the barren mountain landscape along the Kungsleden hiking trail direct from the road and the cabin.

The climbing is demanding and you have to count on sweating a little before being rewarded for your hardship – an almost breathtaking view over the snow covered peaks of Akkajaure, Sarek and Áhkká. A few hundred metres from the cabin is good fishing in Lake Akkajaure, where the rapids have their outflow.
Also, feel free to visit the Suorva warehouse and dam construction that has made this Sweden’s largest regulation warehouse.

The mountain cabin has its own bus stop with daily connections to STF Ritsem, STF Saltoluokta and Gällivare.
 
This is how it works in a mountain cabin
Our mountain cabins offer a simple and authentic stay in multi-bedded rooms with self catering. The rooms are different sizes with bunk beds and usually heated by gas stoves. On site you will be greeted by a cabin manager. As a guest you chop wood, fetch water from the stream or lake, wash up and clean up after youself.

Travel options
STF Vakkotavare is one of the few STF mountain cabins located by a public road. You reach the cottage via the road between Gällivare and Ritsem. The easiest way to get here is by bus from Gällivare, Saltoluokta or Ritsem. There is a car park next to the cabin.

STF Vakkotavare is a cabin on the Kungsleden trail between Nikkaluokta and Saltoluokta. Read more about this section of the trail at www.swedishtouristassociation.com/nikkavakko

Gällivare is connected by daily train with Stockholm and other cities. It is a good idea to book train and bus travel in advance on the same Resplus ticket. If you want to book only the bus journey, you can do so at www.roadtoritsem.com/

Länstrafiken in Norrbotten no longer services the route between Gällivare and Ritsem.
