WHAT IS A MOUNTAIN STATION?
A mountain station is a marvellous mix of mountain hotel, hostel and bed-and-breakfast. What all mountain stations have in common is that they occupy unique sites in our beautiful mountains, often near nature reserves and national parks. They are all located at the start or along the route of a walking or skiing trail. This makes a mountain station the natural base for your mountain adventure, or the starting point for your trip around the mountains in both winter and summer.
ACCOMMODATION AND FACILITIES
Mountain stations offer many types of accommodation – everything from simple rooms with bunk beds to hotel-standard rooms with en-suite shower and WC facilities. The standard of the rooms varies from one mountain station to the next. Most facilities have rooms for visitors with dogs. If you plan to come with your dog, mention this when you book.
If the weather is bad, we try to arrange emergency sleeping facilities on the floor when the facility is fully-booked, to accommodate people who don’t have tents with them. But it can happen that we run out of mattresses sometimes. So we always recommend that you book your overnight stay at our mountain stations in advance.
The reception and sports staff can help you with ideas and guidance for day trips from the station. You can spend time in the common room, having the pleasure of sitting in front of the fire, reading, enjoying other people’s company and discussing where you plan to go the next day. All mountain stations have saunas you can relax in at the end of your day’s activities.
FOOD AND RESTAURANTS
All mountain stations have self-catering facilities should you want to prepare your own food. All mountain stations also have fully licensed restaurants where you can have breakfast, lunch, dinner and coffee/tea/snacks during the day. The exception is the Sylarna Mountain Station in Jämtland, which only provides breakfast, a food package with raw produce for you to prepare your own supper, and a café service during the day.
All mountain stations have shops of differing sizes where you can buy things like food, sports equipment and souvenirs. The range differs from one facility to the next.
HIRE OF SPORTS EQUIPMENT
The larger mountain stations have sports equipment, wet-weather gear, rucksacks, tents, skis, safety equipment, etc. available for hire. Many facilities provide guided tours and other activities that you can sign up for as a visitor. More information, including how to book, is available on the website of each mountain station.
PRICES, OPENING TIMES AND SEASONAL INFORMATION
The winter season runs from the end of February to the end of April or beginning of May. The summer season varies from Midsummer to the middle or end of September. Opening times of mountain stations may differ from one region to the next. Some mountain stations are also open over the New Year and others are open all year round. We recommend booking in advance.
Prices may vary between different mountain stations and at different times of the year. STF members will always get the lowest prices – have a look at the current price list! Many mountain stations offer STF members discounts for some meals and some products in their shops and on the cost of hiring of some sports equipment. Facility fees are charged to campers and to people who only use the facilities during the day. The STF group card for hostels is not valid at STF mountain facilities.
