Mobile coverage in the mountain areas

In the mountain regions, it is not certain that you will be able to use your mobile phone! This is partly because you are moving through rugged terrain with large distances and because the telecommunications networks are not fully developed. It is a good idea to inform your loved ones that you may not be reachable while enjoying your mountain trip.

Mobile phones can only be used in the networks they are connected to. The coverage of these networks is usually good in larger urban areas and along the most trafficked roads. In the mountain regions, Telia has the least poor coverage. In short, you can prepare to relax rather than to stay connected.

You find the best mobile phone reception at the mountain stations

If you need mobile coverage in the mountain areas, your best chance is on major roads and at STF’s mountain stations. Those connected to Telia’s network may have decent range in southern Lapland, in the area around Storulvån-Blåhammaren-Sylarna-Helags in the Jämtland mountains, and in the Vindelfjällen mountains. However, you need to be within sight of the high-altitude mountain stations.

In the northern Lapland mountains, mobile network coverage is very limited and often completely non-existent. This is because the area is large and the number of mountain stations are few. This is especially true for the Kungsleden trail from Abisko to Kvikkjokk, the Padjelantaleden trail, and the Nordkalottleden trail.

Tips for mobile users

  1. Don’t forget that mobile batteries are sensitive to cold. The phone should be stored in an inner pocket to prevent it from discharging.
  2. Bring a power bank to extend battery life if you are staying in a tent or mountain cabin without electricity.
  3. Many map apps are available in offline mode. Perfect as a complement to your map and compass.
  4. Consider bringing a waterproof mobile case or a small plastic bag for mobile use on rainy days.
  5. If you love watching movies, you can download your favorites in advance through various streaming services, including Netflix. That way, you can watch movies even when you do not have a connection. (Of course, STF primarily advocates socializing and relaxation over screen time in the mountain areas!)
