Which are the best hiking trails?
On this page you can read about trails that are immensely popular among hikers. These are wonderful places that offer unforgettable nature experiences, but of course, the list is just a selection. You decide whether you want to visit these gems or hike off the beaten path. If you prefer to discover your own hidden treasures, there are plenty of them from north to south. A suggestion is to plan your adventure before or after the high season! That way, you can enjoy the popular hiking trails in the early summer light or the fresh autumn air – with fewer mosquitoes.
Hiking in Grövelsjön
Discover the beautiful Grövelsjön mountains on both the Swedish and Norwegian sides of the border. The landscape is perfect for hiking through lovely mountain forests, easily accessible peaks, and small streams. You can adjust the length of your hike to suit your preferences, and after a day in the mountain area, the mountain station awaits with a sauna and dinner in the restaurant with a spectacular view.
Vålådalsfyrkanten
The hike along the Vålådalsfyrkanten trail takes you through the beautiful mountain world of Vålådalen, in wilderness and old-growth forest, across mires, flower meadows, and alpine terrain. You start and end your hike at Vålådalen Mountain Station, where you will be well taken care of and can enjoy good food and a made up bed. During the hike, you will overnight in STF’s cozy mountain cabins that await you at the end of each day’s stretch. Food for self-catering can be purchased on-site in many cabins, or you can bring your own food.
Signature trail Österlen
Regardless of the season, nature in Österlen offers fantastic hiking experiences. The Signature Trail Österlen entices with coastal hiking between Nybrostrand and Andrarum, where you can experience both fascinating cultural history and magnificent nature. Along the way, you will also see Sweden’s largest ship setting, Ale stenar, as well as the beautiful views at Stenshuvud. The daily stages range from 5 to 19 kilometers per day, and you comfortably spend the nights at STF accommodations along the way.
Hiking the classic Kungsleden trail
A classic hike is the Kungsleden trail, where you can also climb Sweden’s highest mountain! Kungsleden, stretching between Abisko and Hemavan, is one of the world’s most famous and perhaps best hiking trails. Hike during the summer or when autumn is at its most colorful. The northernmost part of Kungsleden extends from Abisko’s green national park in the north to Kebnekaise’s high alpine massif in the south. Good physical condition is required as there are relatively large elevation changes during the hike. Some of the daily stages are 20 kilometers or longer, so make sure to be well-prepared.
Laponia – hiking with children
For curious children with energy to spare, we suggest an exciting mountain adventure! Take the family on a hike and experience the mountain world where lemmings peek out from under the boardwalks and you can drink the world’s purest water straight from the stream. Hike at a comfortable pace between selected mountain cabins, allowing time to pause for an extra day to explore the surroundings of each cabin. Conclude the adventure at STF Saltoluokta Mountain Station with a delightful dinner and a good night’s sleep before heading home.
Saltoluokta – Kvikkjokk
The Kungsleden trail between Saltoluokta Mountain Station and Kvikkjokk Mountain Station is just over 70 kilometers (about 43 miles) long and takes you through valleys, across open heaths, and down through sparse mountain forests. You will be hiking in a borderland between high mountains and forest landscapes, on the outskirts of Sarek National Park. Therefore, you should have some mountain experience and be able to use a map and compass. Start by spending the night at the mountain station in Saltoluokta, and then along the trail, overnight stsays at STF’s mountain cabins in Sitojaure, Aktse, and Pårte.
Jämtlandstriangeln trail – with or without a guide
Jämtlandstriangeln Trail is a truly popular classic hike! This well-known and popular hike is suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers. The trail goes from accommodation to accommodation where there are shops and self-catering kitchens. The mountain stations Storulvån and Sylarna each have a restaurant for those who want to enjoy a good meal.
Please note! For those who prefer a quieter hike, we suggest weeks 25-27 and Monday to Thursday during weeks 34-38.
