Set off during the high season or hike when the air has become delightfully crisp. You'll sleep well at STF's authentic and sustainable accommodations.

Which are the best hiking trails?

On this page you can read about trails that are immensely popular among hikers. These are wonderful places that offer unforgettable nature experiences, but of course, the list is just a selection. You decide whether you want to visit these gems or hike off the beaten path. If you prefer to discover your own hidden treasures, there are plenty of them from north to south. A suggestion is to plan your adventure before or after the high season! That way, you can enjoy the popular hiking trails in the early summer light or the fresh autumn air – with fewer mosquitoes.

Hiking in Grövelsjön

Discover the beautiful Grövelsjön mountains on both the Swedish and Norwegian sides of the border. The landscape is perfect for hiking through scenic mountain forests, to easily accessible peaks and along small streams. You can adapt the length of your hike to suit your needs, and after a day in the mountains, the Mountain station awaits with a sauna and dinner in the restaurant with stunning views.

Vålådalsfyrkanten on your own

The hike along the Vålådalsfyrkanten Trail takes you through the beautiful mountain landscape of Vålådalen – through wilderness and old-growth forest, across wetlands, flower meadows and open alpine terrain. You start and finish your hike at Vålådalen Mountain station, where you’ll be well looked after and can enjoy good food and a made bed. During the hike, you stay overnight in STF’s cosy mountain cabins, waiting for you at the end of each day’s stage. Self-catering food is available to buy at many of the cabins, or you can bring your own supplies.

Signature trail Österlen

No matter the season, the nature of Österlen offers fantastic hiking experiences. Signature Trail Österlen invites you to a coastal hike between Nybrostrand and Andrarum, where you’ll experience both fascinating cultural history and stunning scenery. Along the way, you’ll also see Sweden’s largest stone ship, Ale’s Stones, as well as the beautiful views from Stenshuvud. The daily stages range from 5–19 kilometres, and you stay comfortably at STF accommodations along the route.

Hike the classic Kungsleden

A true classic is the Kungsleden Trail, where you can also summit Sweden’s highest mountain! Stretching between Abisko and Hemavan, Kungsleden is one of the world’s most famous – and perhaps finest – long-distance hiking trails. Hike in summer or when autumn is at its most colourful. The northern section runs from the lush Abisko National Park in the north to the high alpine massif of Kebnekaise in the south. A good level of fitness is required, as there are significant elevation changes along the route. Some daily stages are 20 kilometres or more, so make sure you’re well prepared.

Laponia – hike with children

For curious children full of energy, we suggest an exciting mountain adventure! Bring the family on a hike and experience the mountains, where lemmings peek out from beneath the boardwalk and some of the world’s чистest water can be drunk straight from the stream. Hike at a comfortable pace between selected mountain cabins, with time to stay an extra day and explore the surroundings. End your adventure at STF Saltoluokta Mountain station with a lovely dinner and a good night’s sleep before heading home.

Saltoluokta – Kvikkjokk on your own

The Kungsleden Trail between Saltoluokta Mountain station and Kvikkjokk Mountain station is just over 70 kilometres long and takes you through valleys, across open heaths and down through sparse mountain forests. You hike in a borderland between high mountains and forest landscapes, on the edge of Sarek National Park. For this reason, you should have some mountain experience and be able to use a map and compass. Start with an overnight stay at the Mountain station in Saltoluokta, then continue along the trail with overnight stays in STF’s mountain cabins at Sitojaure, Aktse and Pårte.

Jämtlandstriangeln trail – on your own or with a guide

Jämtlandstriangeln is a truly popular hiking classic! This well-known and much-loved route suits both beginners and experienced hikers. The hike goes from accommodation to accommodation, where you’ll find shops and self-catering kitchens. At the mountain stations Storulvån and Sylarna, there are also restaurants if you’d like to treat yourself.

Please note! For those who prefer a quieter hike, we suggest weeks 25-27 and Monday to Thursday during weeks 34-38.
