Alpine skiing

Alpine skiing in the mountains offers something for everyone. You can slalom down Åre's slopes or enjoy the off-piste runs of Noulja, take a family-friendly trip to Sälen, or even ski on Midsummer's Eve in Riksgränsen. Afterwards, you can look forward to after-ski, a fine dinner, or relaxing in front of a crackling fireplace. Stay at STF's personal and genuine accommodations near the slopes.

Alpine skiing

Slalom, downhill, and snowboarding are just a few of the sports that fall under alpine skiing. There are many other disciplines as well. Typically, you ski on groomed slopes, known as “pistes,” which ski resorts mark with colors ranging from green to black to indicate difficulty level. In the Swedish mountains, there are ski resorts suitable for all skill levels.

Experienced skiers can head off-piste and enjoy the sense of freedom in the powder snow. Ski touring also falls under the alpine category, taking place in untouched mountain terrain. You ascend the mountain on touring skis and then ski down. But it can be just as enjoyable to have family-friendly skiing adventures with the kids. Equipment is available for rent at most of STF’s mountain stations.

9 tips for beginners

Here you can read about what to keep in mind before you hit the slopes.

  1. Skis, snowboards, boots, and other equipment are available for rent at many of our mountain lodges, as well as at nearly all ski resorts. Check rental options before you go, or read on if you plan to buy your own skis.
  2. Always wear a helmet—even if you ski cautiously, others may not. A back protector can also be a good idea.
  3. There are often specific rules for using the lift system at each ski resort, such as restrictions on allowed equipment or designated times to be on the slopes. Our STF hosts can provide more details about the regulations at your resort.
  4. Be extra careful if you go off-piste, meaning outside of groomed runs or alongside the slopes. If you ski off-piste, follow the signs and markers. It’s a good idea to book a guide for off-piste skiing to discover places you might otherwise miss.
  5. Dress in layers so you can easily adjust and stay dry and warm. Use base layers made of wool or synthetic materials, and avoid cotton next to your skin. Pack thin ski socks—tight boots make your feet cold more quickly. A buff will keep your neck warm in cold weather.
  6. Sunlight reflects off the snow, so use sunscreen and ski goggles even when it’s cloudy.
  7. A small backpack is handy for packing a thermos, snacks, a seat mat, and extra clothes.
  8. Bring extra gloves and a hat so you can switch to dry ones if needed. Have a mix of thick and thin gloves for different conditions.
  9. Check the mountain weather forecast carefully before you head out. If you’re venturing into untouched terrain, pay special attention to avalanche risk. Learn more about mountain safety at fjällsäkerhetsrådet.se.

You must know what you’re doing, if you want to ski off-piste safely. The right technique, the right equipment, and knowledge about how to use the equipment ensure that you are well-prepared for skiing outside the pistes.
