STF Mountain cabins
Staying overnight in one of our mountain cabins is perfect for those who want to venture a bit further into the mountains. There is no electricity or running water, making the experience a stark contrast to everyday stress. With nature as your only neighbor, the feeling of freedom is complete. On this page, we've gathered all the information about our mountain cabins.
What is a mountain cabin?
A mountain cabin is a cabin in a mountain environment intended for overnight stays for hikers, skiers, and mountain visitors. The Swedish Tourist Association’s (STF) mountain cabins are located in scenic spots along the Swedish mountain range. These cabins are far from settlements and roads, meaning you usually need to hike or ski to reach them. Therefore, the cabins are placed along well-marked ski and hiking trails, 10–20 kilometers apart, which corresponds to a day’s journey. The cabins have no electricity, running water, toilets, or showers. This is a place to enjoy the simple life and, perhaps most of all, to experience a real contrast to everyday life. Everyone helps with tasks like fetching water, chopping wood, and stoking the stove.
In our mountain cabins, you’re always welcomed by a cabin host who shows you around and explains how everything works. Overnight stays are in bunk beds, where you are assigned a bed upon arrival. Duvets and pillows are provided, but it’s mandatory to bring your own sleeping bag, travel sheet, or duvet cover. We also recommend bringing your own fitted sheet and pillowcase to ensure all bedding is covered.
Good to know about mountain cabins
Mountain cabin opening hours
The mountain cabins’ opening hours are divided into two seasons. The winter season runs from late February to the end of April or early May. The summer season varies from midsummer to mid or late September. During both the summer and winter seasons, the cabins’ opening hours vary depending on the area and trail routes.
Opening hours for our mountain cabins 2025
The cabin hosts work on a voluntary basis from early morning until late evening. They are, of course, there to look after you as a guest, but keep in mind that they often take a break in the middle of the day. The minimum opening hours are 8-10 a.m. and 4-8 p.m., but many hosts keep the cabin open longer, especially if there are multiple hosts on duty. If you need to leave the cabin early in the morning, it’s wise to stock up and make your purchases the day before.
Safety room always open
When the mountain cabins are closed, an emergency room is available at each cabin (except in Abisko, Grövelsjön, and Vakkotavare) for use in case of an emergency. This room is not intended for overnight stays during planned trips, but only for emergencies. If you plan a mountain tour when the cabins are closed, you must bring a tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag, camping stove, and food for the entire trip. All emergency rooms are very basic. Emergency phones, which connect directly to rescue services and the police, are available in some of these rooms, but not all.

Mountain areas
We have divided the Swedish mountain range into six areas. We’ve done this to make it easier for you to read about different regions and see which trails they include.
Abisko and the Kebnekaise mountains
The Grövelsjö mountains and Rogen
The Jämtland and Härjedalen mountains
The Kungsleden trail
Laponia
Vindelfjällen
Grövelsjön / Rogen
In the border area between Sweden and Norway, our mountain cabins are located in the Rogen area, along the trail between Grövelsjön and Tännäs. A mountain shop is available in Rogen.
Jämtland / Härjedalen
Popular mountain cabins along well-visited trails and in easily accessible mountain areas. Cabins in areas with high service levels and connections to larger mountain stations. Mountain shops are available in several of the cabins.
Kungsleden Vindelfjällen
At the southern starting point of the Kungsleden trail, in Hemavan, the hike begins into the beautiful Vindelfjällen mountains. Mountain cabins are conveniently spaced all the way up to Ammarnäs. Our cabins are open during both winter and summer seasons, and some have mountain shops available.
Laponia
Along the Padjelanta trail and other beautiful locations around Laponia, you’ll find our smaller mountain cabins. Hiking in Laponia offers encounters with both nature and culture. Here lie the cabins that many still have yet to discover. A few of these cabins also have mountain shops available.
Kungsleden Laponia
Along the Kungsleden trail, in and through the Laponia world heritage area, our mountain cabins are located on the hiking sections Kebnekaise-Saltoluokta and Saltoluokta-Kvikkjokk. Along this route, several cabins offer saunas and shops.
Kungsleden Abisko – Kebnekaise
The most hiked section of the Kungsleden trail, this route experiences high visitor numbers at times. Large mountain cabins with high levels of service are available, with shops and saunas in several cabins. Opening period is from mid-June to the end of September, with the winter season running from late February to late April.
Abisko / Kebnekaise
Off the Kungsleden trail, in the northernmost part of Lapland, our mountain cabins are situated in beautiful and iconic locations. These cabins are slightly smaller, and visitor numbers are lower than on the Kungsleden. There is a shop and sauna at Unna Allakas, and several other cabins also have saunas.
