Getting to the mountains

Travelling to the mountains is often part of the adventure itself. Here you can find out more about how to get there and the transport options available once you arrive. Whether you take the night train to Lapland or Jämtland, or continue by bus into the mountain landscape, you’ll start to feel the experience already on the way.

How long does it take to hike?

It is, of course, easier to hike on a smooth and flat trail than to climb a steep mountain, and your hiking speed will reflect this. The overview chart can give you an indication based on experiential grounds.

Tent camping and service fees

Camping in the mountains is free. If you want to use facilities such as guest kitchens, drying rooms, showers, saunas or other shared spaces at STF Mountain cabins and Mountain stations, you need to pay a service fee.

The mountain trail system

The state-managed trail system consists of approximately 5,500 km of marked trails, of which 2,250 km are in Norrbotten and 1,940 km in Jämtland. Bridges, shelters and rowing boats are also part of the system. In addition to the state trails, there are around 2,500 km of trails near communities and tourist facilities in the mountain region.

The Right of public access

Sweden’s natural landscapes are open to everyone thanks to the Right of Public Access. It is a unique opportunity that allows you to enjoy most natural areas freely, even on privately owned land. It also comes with a shared responsibility to show consideration for wildlife, nature, landowners and other people.

Traveling with dogs

When you want to bring your four-legged friend on an adventure, there are a few things to keep in mind – but don’t let that stop you.

Waste management in mountain cabins

Waste management beyond accessible roads is a complex issue. Those of us spending time in the sensitive mountain environment need to work together to make it function. The most important thing is to minimise the amount of waste and food scraps. As a visitor, you are also expected to carry out some of your own rubbish.
