Reindeer in the mountains
As a visitor to the mountains and in all areas where reindeer herding takes place, it is important that you do not disturb or frighten the reindeer. Together with SSR – the Swedish Sami National Association, we have developed some tips on what to keep in mind.
Experiencing the mountains is wonderful. But remember that you are only a temporary visitor and should show consideration for all animals that live there. Feel free to admire the beautiful reindeer from a distance, but leave them in peace and do not get too close. This is especially important during spring, from April to June, when reindeer are particularly sensitive to disturbance as the females are pregnant and give birth to their calves. Stressed females risk losing their calves before birth, and if the herd is disturbed, calves and mothers may become separated – young calves cannot survive on their own. Always keep your distance and allow the reindeer to graze undisturbed.

How to avoid disturbing the reindeer
What does STF do to support reindeer and reindeer herding?
- Works to reduce visitor pressure in the most popular mountain areas and spread visitors across seasons to minimise disturbance.
- Closes mountain accommodation in reindeer grazing areas in April to reduce the number of visitors during the reindeer’s most sensitive period.
- Does not offer ski touring courses in April in the Jämtland Mountains, as the risk of disturbance is high.
- Actively works to reduce helicopter transport during summer to avoid disturbing wildlife. Instead, supplies are stocked during winter when transport over snow is possible.
- Collaborates with Sami communities around our mountain stations on matters such as transport and group activities.
- Regularly informs guests about the needs of reindeer and the importance of not disturbing them.
