Here we provide the answers to the most commonly asked questions.
If you cannot find the answer to your question, you are welcome to contact us. Our Member service will assist you with all questions related to the membership. STF booking service will help you book STF’s mountain huts and mountain stations in Abisko, Saltoluokta, Kebnekaise, Helags, Storulvån, Blåhammaren, Sylarna, and Grövelsjön. They can also assist you with changes and other questions regarding existing bookings made on our website, regardless of the accommodation.
Can I bring my dog to the mountains?
Yes. According to the Rights of Public Access dogs must be kept on a leash from 1 March-20 August. Animal life is at its most sensitive to disturbance just then from even the most peaceful pet dog. Outside these times you must keep close watch over your dog, so that it doesn’t scare the wildlife. Special rules apply, according to the Nature Conservation Act, when taking your dog into a national park area. These rules can be found on the website for the respective county’s administration committee (länsstyrelse).
Dogs are welcome free of charge at STF’s mountain stations. Keep in mind that there are only a limited number of rooms allowed for pets/dogs, so it is important that you book these in advance. When you book online you will see if these specific rooms are available or not. If no rooms allowed for pets/dog are available, please try another date or accommodation.
Read more about hiking with dogs here.
Do I need to pre-book my visit to STF Aurora Sky Station?
If you are planning a visit to STF Aurora Sky Station during the northern light season we recommend that you book in advance, since there are only a limited number of places available to the STF Aurora Sky Station Night Visit each night, and we sell out many nights.
Can I pay with a debit or credit card?
Yes. Most of STF’s accommodations accept the most common debit and credit cards, such as VISA and Eurocard (not Diners and American Express). Places that do not accept card payments state this on their pages (under “Overview”).
Some mountain cabins do not accept card payments. Please read more about payment at mountain cabins.

What changes have been made in the categories of membership and why?
Starting December 16th STF is making changes in the categories of our membership. We have introduced a senior membership for members 75 years or older. This is in order to improve the circumstances for older members who might want to continue supporting the organisation even when they no longer use the benefits anymore.
At the same time, we are removing the membership for children younger than 16 years old. We want to continue making it easier for families with children to discover Sweden. But as a non-profit organisation we do not feel we have to require children to become members in order to do so. We will, of course, continue to inspire families with children to see more of Sweden, but without registering the children in our member database. Children up to the age of 15 will continue to stay at a member rate when travelling with an adult, senior or youth member.
Which cancellation policy applies to reservations with STF?

Variations may occur, but the accommodation will notify you when making the reservation.
For cancellation of activities and other products, different cancellation rules apply depending on the product, so check the terms & conditions for the specific product. Gift certificates, memberships and discounted offers are non refundable.

You go first to Kebnekaise’s mountain station, 19 km from Nikkaluokta, a bus journey from Kiruna. Then you spend the night at the mountain station and set out with the STF guide to reach the summit. You ought to allow a couple of extra days – depending on the weather it might not be possible to make the trip some days. The hike to the summit is tough, but most people can make it with moderate effort.
I am a member of an international organization belonging to Hostelling International, do I get member prices when staying at STF’s accommodations?

Can I bring my pet and does it cost extra?
Many hostels have dog/pet friendly rooms and you can find this information on their websites (under “Facilities and Services”). Some hostels charge extra for the pet’s accommodation. Pets are welcome free of charge at STF’s mountain stations and mountain cabins, however these rooms are subject to availability.
Go to our website and search via our map function, click here.
Under “Accommodation” you can click “Change” and choose which service you want, in this case “Pets allowed”. Then you will see the accommodations that welcome pets.
At some accommodations you pay extra for your pet’s overnight stay, contact the accommodation directly if “pet friendly” rooms are not available while booking online.
At our mountain stations, you and your dog can stay in a private or shared pet-friendly room for an additional fee (service dogs are exempt from this fee). Our mountain cabins also have designated dog rooms that can be booked in advance by selecting the dog option when making your reservation. The surcharge is mandatory for those who wish to bring their dog. Only one person in the party is guaranteed a spot with their dog in the room; the remaining people in the group may be placed in another part of the accommodation. As the room may accommodate multiple dogs, it’s important that your dog is accustomed to being around other dogs in close quarters.
These rooms are limited in number, so it’s important to book a dog/pet-friendly room in advance. When booking online, it will indicate whether these specific rooms are available. If no dog/pet-friendly rooms are available, please try another date or accommodation.
Do I need to book my stay in advance?
We do recommend that you always pre-book your accommodation with us.
At our mountain stations, you can also book and pay for your accommodation on arrival, subject to availability. However, we can not guarantee a bed if you have not pre-booked. In an emergency we always offer roof over your head. All beds in our common rooms can be pre-booked. As far as possible we try to accommodate different parties in different rooms, but you are not guaranteed your own room unless you have made a booking. If you don’t want to share a room with other guests, we recommend that you make your booking for those dates or accommodations where single occupancy is available.
We also recommend our guests to pre-book accommodation in our mountain cabins. Bookings and repayments must be made for the specific date and cabin. Click here to make an online booking. The number of beds available for pre-booking is limited and depends on the type of cabin/area, so they may be fully booked. When you pre-book your stay, you will receive a special discounted advance price, and you are guaranteed a bed as long as you arrive at the cabin no later than 18:00. Later arrivals are guaranteed an unspecified bed. You must be able to show your booking confirmation to the cabin host on arrival, either printed or digital. If you do not have the opportunity to make an advance booking, you can still pay on arrival. In that case you will be given an unspecified bed, which could mean a floor bed in the mountain cabin or a different indoor space. Unspecified beds are normally allocated after 18:00.
Kindly note that tent sites and day visits are not available for pre-booking and that service fees must be paid to the cabin host on arrival.
Read more about staying in our mountain cabins and staying at our mountain stations.
Can I use my own sleeping bag?
In many of our accommodations you can use a sleeping bag, provided you have a sheet and pillowcase with you. The host decides whether to allow this or not. Please contact the accommodation in advance to make be sure of what rules apply.
At our mountain stations and mountain cabins, we recommend that you bring your own bed sheet and pillowcase (at mountain stations these can also be rented on site) in addition to a sleeping bag, travel sheet or duvet cover. For your own hygiene and safety, you should be able to cover all your bedding.
What do I do if I want to stay cheaper at Hostelling International accommodation?
It is possible to cook in the guest kitchens that are available at all accommodations. However, some STF hotels do not have guest kitchens. To ensure that the hotel you want to stay at has a guest kitchen, please read the description for your chosen hotel. The guest kitchen is equipped so that you can cook and eat your food. You share the kitchen and dining area with other guests.
What do I do with a current booking with STF-member discount at an HI-accommodation internationally?

Do I have to share a room with others?
At most of four accommodations you have the option of staying in your own room. If you choose a bed in a dormitory, you should expect to share the room with other guests. At our mountain stations, all our dormitory beds can be booked. As far as possible we try to accommodate different parties in different rooms, but you are not guaranteed your own room unless you have made a booking. If you don’t want to share a room with other guests, we recommend that you make your booking for those dates or accommodations where single occupancy is available. At our mountain cabins beds can only be booked in a multi-bed room, where you will usually share the room with others.

We will, of course, continue to inspire families with children to see more of Sweden, but without registering the children in our member database. Why is the senior membership valid from the common retirement age of 65?
With the senior membership we want to give our older members an opportunity to continue to be STF-members – but to a lower rate. Many members over a certain age do not use the member offers and benefits to the same extent anymore. The member category for seniors has not been introduced based on the retirement age but based on when a number of our members stop using the benefits due to their age. This has of course been difficult to know since it is very individual and hard to make general assumptions.
I am a member of an international organization belonging to Hostelling International, do I get member prices when staying at STF’s accommodations?

If you do not use addressändring.se and want to ensure that our register is updated before your move, you can notify us of the change by logging in as a member here. Is it true that there are a lot of mosquitoes in the mountains?
It is true that there are mosquitoes, but no more than you will find in the archipelago of Stockholm or in the woods in Skåne. Up on the mountain where the wind almost always blows, there are next to no mosquitoes.

Must I be super fit to go on a trip to the mountains?
Absolutely not. There are plenty of ways to enjoy Swedish mountain life without great hardship. Many people enjoy just walking or skiing in the vicinity of the mountain station or mountain cabin. Those planning to make longer excursions will, of course, feel better if they’re not completely out of shape.
Can I cycle on Kungsleden trail?

Can my children, aged 6 and 8 years old, walk in the mountains?
Yes, of course! Make short trips of a varied nature so that they don’t get tired. It can take half a day before they’ve finished playing beside a stream – so take it slowly. A good idea with young children is to have a base (tent or mountain cabin) from which to make trips, so you don’t have to carry too much.
May I fish wherever I like in mountain lakes and streams?
No, you may not. It is, however, possible to purchase a fishing permit for a large number of lakes and stretches of water. Several of our mountain stations and mountain cabins sell these fishing permits. A county’s administrative committee (länsstyrelse) has information about its permitted waters.

The season starts at midsummer and continues into September. High season is between about 20 July and 10 August. Most mountain stations, however, open in February and remain open until the beginning of May. Mountain cabins open in late February/early March and are open until the beginning of May.
Is it possible to stay overnight in mountain cabins and mountain stations out of season?
Yes, but only in emergencies. There is a safety room in some mountain cabins and mountain stations without any road connection.
