Mountain transport

Traveling to the mountain areas is often an adventure in itself. On this page you can read more about how to get there and what transport options are available once you arrive. Whether you take the night train to Lapland or Jämtland, or hop on the bus towards the vast mountain ranges, you will already get a sense of the experiences that await you on the way.

Bus or train to the mountain areas

For many people, taking the train to the mountain areas is the most convenient option. Some routes offer direct trains, while others require a transfer. You can choose between night trains for a comfortable journey while you sleep, or day trains if you want to enjoy the scenery along the way. You can also opt to take a bus to the mountain areas, either all the way or as the final part of your journey.  You find train schedules from the train operators, and the regional public transportation authorities are responsible for bus schedules.

We recommend that you choose eco-friendly transportation options whenever possible. If needed, there are also flights to the mountain areas with departures from places such as Stockholm/Arlanda to Östersund, Hemavan, Gällivare, and Kiruna.

Discount on train travel

As a member of STF, you receive a 10-15% discount on train tickets with four train operators that together cover the majority of Sweden.

Transport in the mountain region

Once you have arrived in the mountain areas, there are boat services that make it easy to travel across lakes and waterways. To see prices, schedules, and routes, we have gathered all the information on the page Boats in the mountains. For example, to reach STF Saltoluokta Mountain Station, you take the train and then continue by boat (in winter, the boat is replaced by snowmobile transport).

Directions to STF’s mountain accommodations can be found under the “Travel options” tab on each accommodation’s page. The mountain stations in Abisko, Grövelsjön, and Storulvån are accessible by car all the way to the accommodation. Many of our other mountain stations and cabins are located in areas without roads, which means you can only reach them by foot or by skis.
