Getting to the mountains
Travelling to the mountains is often part of the adventure itself. Here you can find out more about how to get there and the transport options available once you arrive. Whether you take the night train to Lapland or Jämtland, or continue by bus into the mountain landscape, you’ll start to feel the experience already on the way.
Bus or train to the mountains
For many, taking the train is the easiest option. Some routes offer direct trains, while others require a transfer. You can choose a night train to travel comfortably while you sleep, or a daytime train if you want to enjoy the scenery along the way. You can also travel by bus – either the entire journey or as the final leg of your trip. Train timetables are available from the train operators, and regional public transport authorities provide bus schedules.
We recommend choosing climate-friendly transport options whenever possible. If needed, flights are also available, with departures from Stockholm/Arlanda to destinations such as Östersund, Hemavan, Gällivare and Kiruna.
Getting around in the mountains
Once you’ve arrived in the mountains, boat services make it easy to travel across lakes and waterways. For prices, timetables and routes, we’ve gathered all the information on the page Boats in the mountains. For example, to reach STF Saltoluokta Mountain Station, you can travel by train and then continue by boat (in winter, the boat is replaced by snowmobile transport).
Directions to STF’s mountain accommodation can be found under the “Travel information” tab on each property’s page. The mountain stations in Abisko, Grövelsjön and Storulvån can be reached by car all the way to the door. Many of our other mountain stations and cabins are located in roadless areas, meaning they can only be reached on foot or by skis.
