Accessibility adaptation

Background
On H.M. The King’s 70th birthday, the Swedish Tourist Association and the County Administrative Boards presented a joint gift certificate for a sponsorship of 10,000 meters as part of the “Support Kungsleden” initiative. The entire donation was dedicated to making STF Abiskojaure Mountain Cabin in Abisko National Park more accessible. This adaptation now allows even more people to explore remote wilderness and enjoy an incredible nature experience.

Why was this mountain cabin chosen for accessibility adaptation?
The choice was based on the ease of reaching STF Abisko Tourist Station, where Kungsleden begins. The Abiskojaure cabins are located just 14 kilometers from STF Abisko Tourist Station and are among the most visited cabin sites along Kungsleden. Additionally, STF Abisko Tourist Station is partially adapted for accessibility, making it possible to welcome guests with different functional variations.

Why is this initiative so important?
Our guest surveys show a growing interest in wilderness, outdoor life, and hiking. We want to offer more people the opportunity to visit beautiful places in remote areas.

What has been done as part of the accessibility adaptation?
The adaptation was carried out in close collaboration with Nannie Fredriksson, an accessibility consultant who is herself mobility impaired due to an injury. As part of the renovation, the cabin site now features:

– Ramps between buildings with small decked patios
– Accessible outdoor toilet
– Widened doorways
– New entrance to the store
– Adapted sauna
– A remodeled guest kitchen
– Modified beds for easier access for wheelchair users
– Protective strips around wood stoves
– Fire alarm for the hearing impaired (vibrating pillow)

Initially, we have created conditions that allow wheelchair users and visually impaired guests to visit the mountain cabin with greater ease. Of the cabin’s 41 beds, six have been adapted for wheelchair users. One of the kitchens and one of the outdoor toilets have been renovated, and the sauna has been adjusted to accommodate guests with different needs. Ramps between buildings now allow wheelchair users to move between the guest cabin, sauna, outdoor toilet, and store—though there is no ramp down to the water.

How can guests with disabilities reach the mountain cabin?
Operators in the Abisko area have prepared for visitors with disabilities. For example, the local snowmobile provider offers an adapted snowmobile with sleds to transport guests upon request.
