STF Alesjaure is located 35 km from Abisko and is STF’s largest mountain cabin. Situated in open alpine terrain, it offers breathtaking views of lakes and mountains, with endless possibilities for excursions and tours. This is where the Kungsleden trail, the Vistas trail, and the trail from Unna Allakas meet.
In winter, many visitors come here for telemark skiing on the excellent slopes nearby. For those seeking a greater challenge, a demanding day tour leads to the unnamed peak at 1,835 meters above sea level, located seven kilometers east of STF Alesjaure. Advanced mountaineers can take on Kåtotjåkka, standing at 1,991 meters above sea level, a demanding summit tour. After a long day in the mountains, the wood-fired sauna offers a well-deserved warm retreat.
Near Alesjaure, the Leavas Sami community has a summer settlement. If you visit in early July, you may witness the traditional Sami calf marking. The waterfall on the eastern side of Alesjaure is also worth a day trip, with the hike passing the Sami settlement and continuing for another kilometer.
Wood-fired sauna
The sauna at Alesjaure is a popular attraction and operates daily during the season. A sauna session after a long hiking day is pure relaxation. For the full experience, take a refreshing dip in the Alesätno river to cool down after the heat—it’s an opportunity you shouldn’t miss! The sauna facilities include a changing room, washroom, and sauna room, with designated times for men, women, and mixed groups.
Good to know
- The mountain cabin has a reception where you check in for your overnight stay.
- In summer, a circulation pump and a gasoline-powered water pump provide water directly to the area between the cabins, making it easy for guests to collect water near the guest cabins. A separate water supply for the sauna is also available, simplifying water access in summer. In winter, fetching water is steep and time-consuming.
- During the summer, Roland Enoksson operates boat transport on Lake Alesjaure. The boat runs on a set schedule and can shorten the hiking distance by 6 kilometers. Signposts at the northern end of the lake lead to the boat dock, which connects to a pier near the sauna.
- Alesjaure is within the Kebnekaise regulation area, meaning a permit is required for snowmobile use. Snowmobile traffic in the area is very limited.
