Northern lights and midnight sun

The magical northern lights attract thousands of visitors each year from around the world. Abisko and the area surrounding Kiruna are among the most reliable places in the world to see the aurora, offering a high chance of spotting the dancing lights during the winter months. The farther you get from city lights, the clearer the view, so a trip to Abisko is a great option. You can get there in just a couple of hours by train or bus.

In summer, it’s the midnight sun that captivates. Experiencing bright summer nights when the sun never sets is something words can hardly describe, it must be lived. The best time for the midnight sun is in June.

The mountains around the corner

Kiruna is a natural hub for heading into Sweden’s northernmost mountain region. Buses depart from here to Nikkaluokta and the Kebnekaise massif, as well as to Abisko where the famous Kungsleden trail begins. Hiking and ski trails extend northward toward Treriksröset and the Nordkalotten Trail. There are many possibilities – make sure to plan ahead and be properly equipped and informed for a safe and enjoyable mountain experience.

Kiruna’s iron ore mine is one of the largest in the world and has played a crucial role in the city’s development. At the LKAB Visitor Centre, you can learn more about the mine’s history, its impact on the community, and join guided tours down into the mine. Visit LKAB’s website for current information and opening hours.

Kiruna church

Kiruna’s beautiful wooden church, built in the early 20th century and inspired by Norwegian stave churches, is considered one of Sweden’s most unique church buildings. It is currently being relocated to the new town center, which means it will be closed to visitors throughout 2025.

Kiruna’s new city center

In one of the world’s most remarkable urban transformation projects, large parts of Kiruna are being relocated as the mine’s expansion affects the foundations of the old town. The new city center combines modern architecture with historic elements, including the clock tower from the old city hall, which has been moved here. A fascinating destination that tells the story of both future and past.
