STF Lantgården Hagaby is perfectly located for a hike across coastal meadows to the eastern shore, where you can search for orchids or go birdwatching in early spring.
Hiking
Or perhaps take a peaceful morning hike to the boathouses at Kropporde to enjoy the stillness and the view of Högby lighthouse? Several local hiking trails crisscross the island, whether you prefer walking by the sea or along gravel roads.
Cycling
Northern Öland might be best experienced from a bike saddle. Both the Sverigeleden and Ölandsleden trails pass by here. Since the island is narrowest in the north, you can actually explore both the eastern and western coasts in one day. Öland’s flat landscape makes cycling easy and suitable for both beginners and seasoned cyclists. A bike also gives access to the island’s wide beaches—don’t forget a picnic basket with local treats.
Birdwatching
Birdwatching in this area is fantastic. Nesting sea eagles, waders, gulls, and ducks can all be found here. The nightingale is often heard, too. Many birdwatchers return year after year and share their sightings with joy—that alone says a lot.
Högenäs Orde
Few places are as delightful as the Högenäs Orde nature reserve near Källa. From the beacon atop the ridge, you’ll have stunning views of the sparkling Baltic Sea. This is also a wonderful orchid site, offering rewarding spring hikes and birdwatching experiences.
Discover Trollskogen
Trollskogen offers many beautiful hiking options well worth a visit. The Naturum centre has knowledgeable guides happy to help. Hike out to the shipwreck Swiks or see the 900-year-old Troll Oak deep in the forest. Don’t miss the view from Högby lighthouse or the rauks and sand dunes in Byrum.
Böda beach
Along the endless stretch of Böda beach, you can walk for hours in peace or stop to explore the more lively entertainment at Böda Sands camping. Prefer a swim closer to home? The sandy beach at Hagaby is just 2 km from the hostel. Other popular beaches on the northern coast include Lyckesand, Fagerör and Homrevet.
Böda forest railway
Visit a heritage railway in northern Öland. The track is a 4.2 km narrow-gauge line with a gauge of 600 mm. The forest railway runs between Fagerrör and Trollskogen in Böda Kronopark, just north of Böda village. A locomotive shed and station house are located in Fagerrör. Combine your railway visit with a beautiful hike along the beach for one part of the journey.
Källa old church ruins
The ruins of Källa old church lie just over 5 km south of the hostel. Built in the 12th century, the church originally had two floors. Today, it is a very popular wedding church and well worth a visit.
