Ottsjö is the perfect base for unforgettable year-round mountain experiences. Explore a wide range of activities or simply enjoy the peaceful beauty of one of Sweden’s most stunning mountain regions. 

Summer in Ottsjöfjällen 
During spring, summer, and autumn, the area offers a network of scenic hiking trails starting just outside the door. From demanding climbs to gentle day hikes, options abound. The surroundings include ancient forests, mystical woodlands, and stunning open views. Lake Ottsjön below is ideal for paddling or rowing, and full of mountain fish for curious anglers. Boats are available for rent in the village. Ottsjö Kayak Center also rents kayaks and SUP boards and offers courses. 

Hiking 
Hiking in Ottsjö offers grand views, physical challenges, and sheltered forests. Along the way, there are plenty of rest spots and wind shelters. A well-developed trail system connects to nearby villages like Trillevallen and Vålådalen and leads up to STF’s Mountain Cabins. Trails are well marked and distances suit all levels. 

Through a partnership with guide company Fjällen kallar, guided tours are available year-round – both day trips and longer mountain hikes. 

A good shorter hike is to Platåkåtan, a few kilometers away – ideal for a day trip with a packed lunch and even suitable for children. 

Trail running 
Many of the local hiking trails are perfect for mountain running – from easy loops to the demanding Fjällmaraton trail through large parts of Södra Årefjällen. After your run, relax in the sauna at Ottsjö Wärdshus or take a refreshing swim in Lake Ottsjön. 

Fjällfysiken 
On rainy days, head to Fjällfysiken gym – just a stone’s throw away. As a guest, you have free 24/7 access. The gym is fully equipped for strongman, crossfit, and powerlifting, and also has space for mobility and group training. 

Rafting, kayaking, SUP

Fishing 
Lake Ottsjön offers excellent mountain fishing. Nearby rivers and streams are also popular. A fishing license is required – check local regulations before heading out. 

Flatbread baking 
Visit the local bakehouse to learn the traditional art of baking flatbread. Led by a local baker, this hands-on experience lets you knead, roll, and bake your own delicious bread while the scent of fresh baking fills the air. 

This is more than just food – it’s a journey into history and tradition. Take a break, experience the craft, and enjoy warm bread fresh from the oven. 

Winter in Ottsjöfjällen 
In winter, Södra Årefjällen offers a calm alternative to the busier Åre. Several nearby ski resorts provide beautiful alpine skiing with shorter lift lines – such as Edsåsdalen, Trillevallen and Vålådalen. A day trip to Åre or Duved is also easy. From Undersåker, you can take a train or ski bus straight to the slopes. 

Alpine ski touring 
For lovers of alpine ski touring, Ottsjö is a dream. The trail center is located just above Ottsjö Wärdshus. Well-marked routes connect you to Trillevallen, Vålådalen and beyond – all the way to STF’s network of Mountain Cabins. 

Nordic ski touring 
There are excellent trails for Nordic ski touring starting in Ottsjö. For early-season snow, Vålådalen is one of the best spots in Sweden. Equipment rental and ski services are available in Vålådalen and nearby Undersåker. 

Downhill skiing 
For downhill skiing, there are plenty of nearby options. Åre is about 30 minutes away, while Trillevallen offers family-friendly slopes much closer. Other great alternatives within an hour include Edsåsdalen, Bydalen, Duved and Storlien. 

Dog sledding 
Just down the road, you’ll find Wild Spirit – a local dog sledding company. Visit the kennel, learn what it’s like to work with a dog team, or book a sled tour at wildspirit.se (opens in new tab). 

Ice fishing 
Drill a hole, bring a simple rod and bait, pack some fika – and you’re ready for a few relaxing hours on the ice. Lake Ottsjön is home to both trout and char.
