Skeppsholmen och Kastellholmen
Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen were once naval yards for the Swedish fleet, with shipyards and workshops. Today, the islands are home to Moderna Museet, the Centre for Architecture and Design, the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, the Royal Institute of Art and much more.
Together, Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen are part of Stockholm’s National City Park. The old trees in the English-style park from the 1790s attract a variety of forest birds, and the island’s unique flora includes species such as bellflower and wild thyme. At Svensksundsvägen 13, you’ll find a stretch of lawn rich in fragrant wild thyme – a rare species that thrives here, blooming in reddish violet.
Cross the bridge to Kastellholmen and you’ll find a few residential buildings, old storage houses, a skating pavilion and the red-brick Kastellet from 1848, designed by architect Fredrik Blom. The two-storey building once housed officers and guards.
