Childrens activities

The accommodation’s home page: STF Storulvån Mountain station

Here at the end of the road, in the heart of the mountains, like a safe haven at the foot of the peaks, children hold a special place. Here, nature itself is an adventure playground, with playful guides, family weeks, and holiday programs. No matter when you visit Storulvån, there’s always something to discover for both young and old.

Outdoor activities on-site

  • Bring our playbox outside to play in the yard.
  • Take a refreshing dip in Ulvån— suitable for all ages.
  • Borrow skis/snowshoes and explore the surrounding area. Skis are available in sizes 100–160 cm and should be about 10 cm longer than the child.
  • Activity course for all ages, with various obstacles that train children’s balance, strength and agility. Also for adults, of course.
  • Sleds, snow racers, and shovels for building sun pits are also available to borrow, as well as child carriers.
  • Borrow kubb, boules, or croquet from the reception and challenge your family!

Indoor activities

  • Board games for children
  • Playroom
  • In the restaurant, you’ll find crayons, toys, and crafts for the little ones
  • Try our climbing wall—Sweden’s tallest indoor climbing wall made of natural rock.

Excursion tips for families

  • A short hike or ski tour downstream along the summer/winter trail for a picnic before heading back.
  • Walk up to the “picnic table” or just the scenic viewpoint at the end of the accessible trail towards Storulvåfjället.
  • A summit hike to Getryggen—a slightly more demanding adventure for older children.

Family-friendly day hikes

Stor-Ulvån’s outlet, approx. 1.5 km round trip
The shortest tour in the area. Follow the gravel road eastward behind the mountain station. After descending the hill, pass a building on your left, then continue along the path until you reach Handölan. A gentle and cozy walk along Stor-Ulvån.

The collapsed bridge over Handölan, approx. 2.5 km round trip
In December 2016, the bridge was destroyed due to unusually mild weather, which caused ice to carry it downstream. Only the foundation remains. Cross the bridge over Handölan and take the path to the left after the marsh. Follow the trail through birch forest and wetlands to reach Handölan.

The picnic table, approx. 3 km round trip
This trail leads just above the tree line and offers stunning views. The summer path is easy to follow, though rocky and steep in places. Cross the bridge over Storulvån, turn right after the marsh, and pass by the Old Station. Follow the trail uphill, and just before the path splits toward Sylarna/Blåhammaren, you’ll find a picnic table—the perfect place to rest and take in the views of Getryggen, Bunnerfjällen, Sylarna, and Helags.

Storulvåfjället, approx. 6–7 km round trip
Follow the route to the picnic table, then take the Blåhammaren trail. After 400–500 meters, turn left at a small sign. The narrow path is easy to follow, with plenty of scenic rest spots—perhaps climbing a boulder or lying in the heather on the mountainside. Walk as far as you like; the trail continues all the way to the top of Storulvåfjället.

Lill-Ulvån suspension bridge, approx. 6–7 km round trip
Continue past the picnic table toward Sylarna. If the weather is clear, you’ll have a fantastic view of the Syl massif. Eventually, the trail descends toward the bridge. It’s a bit airy underfoot, but those who cross are rewarded with a beautiful picnic spot and a chance for a swim.

Lillulvå loop, approx. 7 km
Follow the trail to the old collapsed bridge, then take a faint path along Handölan until you reach Lillulvån’s outlet. Turn west and follow another path along Lillulvån until you reach the main trail between Storulvån and Sylarna. Turn right and head north back to the mountain station.

Getryggen summit, approx. 7 km round trip
Stand outside the station facing Getryggen. Behind the round building, the trail begins. Follow it as high as you can manage, stopping to enjoy the view along the way. The first part is well-marked and boardwalked, but as you ascend, it becomes rockier. To reach the summit, keep slightly left—the higher you go, the clearer the path becomes. This hike requires good weather and plenty of energy!

Getporten, approx. 8 km round trip
If you have access to a car, a great day trip is hiking into one of the valleys of Snasahögarna. Park near Sönner-Tvärån and head up the valley. A faint trail runs along the river for the first few kilometers, then the terrain is unmarked. From Getporten, you’ll have stunning views of Blåhammaren, Ånnsjön, and the valley framed by Getryggen in the south and Sönner-Tväråklump in the north.

Snasahögarna wind shelter, approx. 10 km round trip
Another great hike—either on its own or combined with Getporten to circle Sönner-Tväråklump. Park near Norder-Tvärån, where a trail follows the southern side of the river for a few kilometers before becoming rockier up to the wind shelter. From here, you can either return the same way or continue around Sönner-Tväråklump and descend into the valley.

Ulvåtjärn, approx. 12 km round trip
Follow the description to the picnic table, then continue toward Blåhammaren. The summer trail is well-trodden and easy to follow, winding through birch forest before leveling out on scenic mountain heaths. After 6 km, you’ll reach Ulvåtjärn, where a wind shelter sits across the water. If the water level is high, it may be better to have your break on the southern shore.
