Things to keep in mind

Tarfala is STF’s highest located mountain cabin, situated in Sweden’s most high-alpine area, surrounded by glaciers, towering peaks, and beautiful mountain lakes. Below is some important information to consider:

Weather and wind

At 1,180 meters above sea level, the area is heavily exposed to the elements, and strong winds can often howl around the cabin. Keep in mind that mountain weather can be unpredictable. We strongly recommend carrying a wind sack and appropriate safety equipment at all times.

Avalanches

Large amounts of snow accumulate on the west side of the Tarfalavagge valley, forming significant overhanging cornices in winter. Before setting out on a steep descent, check with the cabin host or guides at Kebnekaise for recent snow conditions, weather updates, and avalanche risks. Also, note that the valley is narrow in places, meaning an avalanche could impact travelers lower down as well.

Glaciers

From the cabin, you’ll have breathtaking views of massive glaciers of varying sizes and types. While they may look inviting, be cautious before setting out on a glacier hike on your own. Hidden crevasses beneath the snow can pose serious risks. Proper knowledge of glacier travel and the right safety equipment are essential.
