Kebnekaise – Glacier research at Tarfala
A clear sign of global warming is the melting of glaciers. At Tarfala Research Station, measurements of Storglaciären have been conducted since 1946, making these mass balance measurements one of the longest continuous data series in the world.
Join us for a hike through the stunning landscapes of the Kebnekaise mountains while gaining a deeper understanding of how glaciology enhances our knowledge of climate change. Together with a guide we will hike 8 km to the Tarfala Research Station. The trail leads us through deep valleys and majestic mountains. Upon arrival, we will meet the staff at the research station, who will provide a guided tour and an interactive presentation, offering unique insights into their research.
This excursion is ideal for anyone looking to combine mountain hiking with a unique understanding of the significance of glaciology – whether you’re seeking an alternative to a summit climb or an active rest day after reaching Kebnekaise’s southern peak. Here, the joy of hiking, curiosity, and climate knowledge come together for an unforgettable experience.
