Discover more
Arholma Nord is a place to simply be – and to discover. Here, seaside adventures await, along with tranquillity and a strong presence of both nature and military history.
At the heart of the island lies the village, with boathouses, a church and the old daymark “Båken” – now home to an art exhibition – blending with farm buildings, traditional houses and everyday island life. This is also where the boats arrive and where you’ll find the small grocery store and café – a natural stop for freshly baked bread, ice cream in the sun, or the items you forgot to pack.
North of the village stretches the nature reserve, with deep forests, small lakes and breathtaking views of the sea. This is also where the island’s Cold War history comes to life. At Arholma Nord, you can join a guided tour of Batteri Arholma to learn more.
For those who enjoy being active, there are many options. Paddle a kayak or SUP, cycle to explore the island or ride the zipline that runs across the outdoor terrace. For slower moments, the jetty, sea-view sauna or a swim from the cliffs are all tempting. You’ll also find open grassy areas, fire pits and an environment that invites both connection and calm.
Whether you’re travelling solo, as a group, with family or colleagues, there’s something for everyone. Arholma Nord is a place to pause – and to return to.
Stockholm Archipelago Trail
Arholma is the northernmost section of the long-distance Stockholm Archipelago Trail, which links islands throughout the archipelago. The Arholma section is around 13 kilometres long if you hike the full route, taking you through meadows, forest paths, past old farms, viewpoints and historic defence sites.
You can start directly at the jetty where the passenger boat docks and head north toward Arholma Nord for a shorter hike, or south along the eastern shore for a slightly longer route with more sea views. Or start at Arholma Nord and hike the entire loop, returning after about 13 kilometres.
The trail is easy to walk and perfect for both short strolls and longer day hikes. No matter the direction, it offers a close encounter with the island’s nature and character. Many choose to end the hike with a sauna or a drink by the sea at Arholma Nord.
