The accommodation’s home page: STF Fredriksborg Hotel

Fredriksborg is located in northern Värmdö, surrounded by seaside restaurants, swimming spots and cultural sites, as well as small farm shops, artisans and art galleries during summer.

For those who want to explore the surroundings, bicycles are available to borrow as well as maps of local hikes. Below is a selection of experiences at and around the hotel.

Hiking

There are plenty of hiking opportunities around Fredriksborg. A short walk leads through the fortress area, where historic walls, old passageways and rocky outcrops create a dramatic landscape with sweeping views over the fairway. Follow the path down to the water and continue towards Värmdö’s northern headland, where small cliffs and peaceful bays offer beautiful rest spots and evening sun.

Hike in a classic archipelago setting along Myttingelinjen towards Skäggaudd, or continue across to Rindö in the direction of Vaxholm. The area is relatively untouched and follows the historic Vaxholmslinjen, with sheltered bays, swimming and barbecue areas, as well as plenty of hiking, running and cycling trails.

For longer hikes, Strängnäsuddens nature reserve offers hilly terrain, rocky plateaus and tranquil forests, while Ösbyträskets nature reserve features wetlands, deciduous forest and rich birdlife. The trails at Siggesta gård provide further variety with meadows, cultural landscapes and woodland – perfect for half-day outings and family-friendly walks.

For a day trip, you can take a Waxholmsbolaget boat from Vaxholm or from Grenadjärsbryggan on eastern Rindö, about 2.5 km from Fredriksborg.

Things to do at Fredriksborg

In addition to hiking, you can cycle, kayak, swim from the cliffs or visit nearby cultural sites. The fortress is a must, as are the viewpoints surrounding it. The hotel arranges daily guided tours of the fortress where you can explore cellar vaults, powder rooms and the lookout tower 60 metres above sea level, offering magnificent views over the archipelago and towards Stockholm.

Down by the jetty there is a small bay with a stone staircase and iron ladder if you’d like to take a swim. Stay close to the shore and be mindful of currents and swell. The nearest small beach on Värmdölandet is just under a kilometre away in idyllic Vretaviken, better suited for swimming without boat traffic. Bathrobes are available in the rooms and extra towels can be borrowed at the hotel.

For a quieter moment, all you need is a book and a sun-warmed rock.
