Halmstad is so much more than a summer seaside town – it is a place where nature, culture and history meet, creating endless opportunities for adventure and inspiration.

For those seeking active experiences and genuine encounters with both landscape and local history, Halmstad and its surroundings offer something truly special. Here you will find long hiking trails and cycling routes, water sports and beach life, as well as a wide range of cultural attractions.

Hiking

Lace up your hiking boots and head out on one of the many trails winding through Halland’s beautiful and varied landscapes. Discover Prins Bertils path, an 18-kilometre coastal hiking trail that takes you from Halmstad castle to Tylösand, offering stunning sea views and idyllic coves along the way. Explore the magic of the forests in Simlångsdalen, where lakes and wetlands create a sense of tranquillity and wilderness. Several magnificent trails await here, including Danska fall, a nature trail where you encounter rushing waterfalls and an enchanting forest environment. For longer hikes, Hallandsleden stretches across the entire region, offering both forest and coastal landscapes.

Cycling

Halmstad is fantastic to experience by bike. Here you will find country roads winding through open fields and small villages, as well as mountain bike trails that challenge both beginners and experienced riders. Along Kattegattleden, Sweden’s first national cycling route, you can enjoy sea views and picturesque stops along the way. For mountain biking enthusiasts, both Sjöbo MTB-trails and Galgberget offer challenging trails winding through lush forest.

Water sports and beach life

Water sports and beach life truly define Halmstad. Here you will find 45 kilometres of swim-friendly coastline, whether you prefer adventurous cliff swimming, small cozy coves or wide sandy beaches. The beaches are equally beautiful all year round, inviting long walks and jogging during spring and autumn.

Tylösand is one of Sweden’s most famous and popular beaches, located west of Halmstad. It is known for its more than four kilometres of fine-grained sand, dune landscapes and lively summer atmosphere with after beach and a wide range of restaurants and activities at Hotel Tylösand. The beach is EU-certified and a flagship of Halmstad’s coastline, with lifeguards, a golf course and proximity to Prins Bertils path. Conditions here are perfect for surfing, SUP and kayaking.

Frösakull strand is just as beautiful as the well-known Tylösand beach but offers a slightly calmer atmosphere. Walk along one of the many boardwalks that lead from the summer cottage areas over the sand dunes down to the beach.

Ringenäs is the northern part of the four-kilometre-long sandy beach in Tylöbukten. Here, just like at Frösakull, the atmosphere is a little more peaceful.

Östra stranden is located about 4 kilometres from central Halmstad and is a shallow, family-friendly sandy beach with many service facilities and a playground.

At Grötvik you can swim from the cliffs, the jetty or the small beach in the harbour. Stroll along the waterfront promenade past the old quarry, which today includes a wakeboard park. From Spritkullen, the highest point, you have magnificent views over Grötvik and out to sea.

Worth a visit

Rhododendronparken and Tjuvahålan form a scenic area near Tylösand in Halmstad, known for its beautiful rhododendron bushes that bloom at their best in late May and early June. The area features walking paths and close proximity to both the sea and Tjuvahålan, a small cove with cliffs and a beach that offers a relaxing nature experience.

Cultural experiences and historical treasures

Halmstad is a city rich in culture and a dream for art and photography enthusiasts.

Hallands art museum features both contemporary and historical works, including those by Halmstadgruppen, the city’s own modernist artists. Works by Halmstadgruppen can also be seen as public art in Norre Katts park and at Halmstads theater.

Tres Hombres Art is a well-known art gallery in Halmstad, located at Hotel Tylösand, founded by Per Gessle and Lars Nordin. It focuses primarily on international photographic art by renowned photographers such as Anton Corbijn and Albert Watson, but also exhibits painting and sculpture. You do not need to be a hotel guest to visit the exhibition, and admission is free.

The PhotoGallery is one of Scandinavia’s largest (400 sqm) and most renowned galleries for photographic art, set in a fantastic atmosphere. Here you will find everything from iconic portraits of music legends to photographs by Christian Coigny, Rodney Smith, Alex Timmermans and Albert Watson.

Halmstads castle is a 17th-century castle beautifully located by the Nissan river, offering both guided tours and exhibitions. Do not miss Sankt Nikolai church, one of the city’s oldest buildings, or Möllebygdens Hembygdsmuseum, which tells the story of life in Halland past and present.

Family adventures

In Norre Katts Park there is a large jungle playground with an almost nine-metre-high climbing tower, slide, swings, trampoline, carousel and small animal sculptures shaped like monkeys, crocodiles, turtles and parrots.

For families with children, Möllebygdens Hembygdsmuseum and Sankt Nikolai church are also exciting stops filled with history and stories.

Brottet is a popular municipal outdoor swimming area with free admission, perfect for families with children.

Local food experiences

Halland is known for its rich food culture. Cheese, milk, meat, vegetables and bread are produced and grown with care, passion and dedication. Farm shops with organic vegetables are mixed with local sourdough bakeries, award-winning restaurants and cafés where only the best is good enough. Feel free to ask for tips and do not miss the opportunity to bring home high-quality local produce to Halmstad Gårdshotell, where you have access to a guest kitchen, a large grill and a pizza oven in the garden.
