The accommodation’s home page: STF Pensionat Grisslehamn

From Pensionat Grisslehamn, you’re within walking distance of everything Grisslehamn has to offer. Stroll around the fishing village and soak up the atmosphere, it’s an experience in itself. Just two minutes from the guesthouse lies the charming fishing harbor on the Åland Sea, where you’ll find a fish shop, piers, restaurants, an art gallery, and an unbroken horizon over the sea.

Grisslehamn is also an excellent base for exploring Singö, Väddö, and the beautiful Uppland coast. Easily accessible by car or public transport, the area offers numerous cultural and natural experiences to explore once you’ve discovered the charms of Grisslehamn.

Hiking
If you enjoy hiking, there are plenty of opportunities around Grisslehamn. A manageable day hike is the final leg of the Roslagsleden trail, starting or ending in Grisslehamn. Transport can be arranged for easier planning. Grisslehamn is also part of the Vikingaleden, which is included in the St Olav Waterway—the world’s first water-based pilgrimage route.

Cykling
If you’re up for a challenge, there are fantastic mountain biking trails on Singö, perfect for a muddy and adventurous ride. Road cyclists will enjoy the areas around Herräng and the coastal road. Enthusiastic cyclists can even make their way here directly on two wheels—120 km from Stockholm or 100 km from Uppsala—via bike trails like “Cykelspåret” and “Kustvägen.” We recommend avoiding highways 76 and 283 between Norrtälje and Grisslehamn, as they are both busy and narrow.

After an overnight stay at the guesthouse, continue your bike tour over to Åland and Mariehamn, making for a delightful two-day adventure.

Paddling
Launch your kayak just 150 meters from the guesthouse for a paddle on the sheltered Singöfjärden or venture out into the more challenging Åland Sea. Your kayak can be stored in the guesthouse’s garden between outings.

Swimming
Choose between the fresh Åland Sea on the outer side or the calmer waters of Singöfjärden. The popular Engström Bay, located by Engström’s studio, features both rocks and sand and is a ten-minute walk from the guesthouse. For a longer sandy beach, Kvarnsand is three kilometers away, and along the Väddö canal at Ekbacken, there’s a public swimming area.

Albert Engström and Grisslehamn’s cultural history

In the early 1900s, writer, artist, and Swedish Academy member Albert Engström moved to Grisslehamn, where he gathered the cultural elite of the time to create and socialize. A walk to Engström’s studio, beautifully situated on the cliffs, takes you past his home—now a museum and café—and the “Artist’s House,” located in the stable where the horse Rolf Krake lived. The studio, painted white toward the sea like a landmark and red toward land, offers guided tours and insights into Engström’s creative world.

Along the way, you can also visit an optical telegraph, a precursor to today’s digital communication. Previously located at the Museum of Technology in Stockholm, it was used to transmit messages in a binary system, with messages to Stockholm taking about 30 minutes to send.

For maritime enthusiasts, the Roslagen Maritime Museum in Älmsta (a 15-minute drive from Grisslehamn) is a real treasure. Don’t miss the museum’s unique small annex, “Lars Matts Eriks sjöbod,” located in Grisslehamn.
