Saxnäsgården is located along Vildmarksvägen – one of Sweden’s highest roads, known for its spectacular views, mighty mountains and wild landscapes.
The road takes you through untouched nature and past several places of interest. During the summer, the road opens across the Stekenjokk plateau and offers the mountain world’s rich display of wildflowers. Along the route, there are plenty of opportunities to stop for hiking, fishing and photography.
Mountain hiking
Around Saxnäs, there are many beautiful mountain trails open in both summer and winter. The mountain ranges surrounding Saxnäs and the mythical Kultsjödalen are magnificent and widely renowned.
Marsfjällen
A mighty mountain massif with sweeping views, dramatic peaks and grand scenery. Perfect for mountain hiking, skiing and close-to-nature experiences all year round. There are both easily accessible trails and challenging summit hikes for the adventurous. The area also offers rich flora and fauna.
Satsfjället
A scenic mountain ridge with excellent trails for hiking and Nordic ski touring. Here you will find vast forests, clear lakes and rich wildlife. The area is less visited and offers a true sense of stillness and wilderness. In winter, Satsfjället attracts visitors with untouched snowy expanses and silence. Satsfjället is easy to reach, with parking right at the foot of the mountain.
The art trail between Saxnäs and Borgafjäll
A unique hiking trail that combines art experiences with nature, where you encounter fascinating artworks placed along the beautiful route between the mountain villages. The trail is about 20 kilometres long and makes the hike a different and inspiring experience. Each artwork has its own story and offers new perspectives on the landscape.
Stekenjokk
A high mountain area known for its open landscape, summer wildflowers and unique natural phenomena. The road here is an experience in itself every summer. The area is also home to many bird species and reindeer, and snow can remain far into the season. Stekenjokk offers breathtaking views and a true mountain feeling.

Trappstegsforsen
Just before you arrive in Saxnäs, you pass the mighty Trappstegsforsen, where the water cascades down several levels – a popular and easily accessible excursion destination with picnic areas and magical views. During spring and early summer, the rapids are at their most dramatic when the snow melts. There are also excellent opportunities here for picnics and photography.
Marslidens badplats
An idyllic swimming spot where you can take a dip with magnificent mountains as your backdrop – perfect for a warm summer day or a picnic by the water. The water is clear and the surroundings peaceful. Both locals and visitors gather here to enjoy nature and the refreshing water.
Fiskonfallet
A beautiful waterfall near Saxnäs, surrounded by untouched nature. A perfect destination for an excursion or an outdoor picnic. The waterfall is especially impressive during the spring flood when the water rushes through. A short hiking trail leads you through the forest to the falls.

Ricklundgården
An artist’s home and museum in Saxnäs, where visitors can experience inspiring art, cultural history and a unique setting with the mountains as a backdrop. Ricklundgården has long been a centre for artistic residencies. Here, you can join guided tours, see exhibitions and take part in the fascinating history of the estate.
Marsliden, nybyggare Pålssons stuga, Bernhard Nord
Marsliden is a beautiful mountain village with roots in the early settler era. Here, you can visit Pålssons stuga and read about Bernhard Nord’s books on the village’s history. The surroundings offer fantastic views and a rich cultural heritage. Marsliden is also the starting point for several beautiful hiking trails.
Skvaltkvarnen in Grytsjö
A traditional water-powered mill in the village of Grytsjö, whose history reflects the rural cultural heritage of the area. Here, you can see how flour was milled in the past. The area around the mill is scenic and invites you for a walk. A living piece of history showing how people once lived and worked.
Fatmomakke
A unique church town with Sami kåtor and church cottages by Kultsjön. The site tells the story of the meeting between Sami and Swedish culture and dates back to the 18th century. Traditional Sami celebrations and church weekends are still held here. Fatmomakke is a place of strong presence and rich history.
Norgefarargården
A cultural heritage site in Klimpfjäll that recalls the Norwegian trading journeys of the past. Here, you will find exhibitions and a café, and gain insight into the area’s history. The farm is beautifully located with views of the mountains. A visit here offers a vivid picture of life in the borderlands long ago.
Cycling

Birdwatching and fishing
The area around Saxnäs is widely known for its unique fishing. There are many renowned fishing waters for both experienced anglers and beginners. Birdwatching also attracts many enthusiastic visitors. For both birdwatching and fishing, there are local guides who can help you find the right places.
