Hiking
Tresticklans nationalpark
The surroundings of Stationshuset are known for their beautiful nature and many lakes in a landscape clearly shaped by the Ice Age. Several nature reserves and Tresticklans nationalpark, the largest roadless and undeveloped forest area in southern Sweden, are located nearby.
Here you hike through untouched wilderness with high mountain ridges, deep forests and clear forest lakes. The national park has about 23 kilometres of marked trails, all with a moderate level of difficulty.
Budalsvikenleden – 4,5 km
A hike from the main entrance to the national border and the tourist cabin in Budalsvika on the Norwegian side.
Bråtaneleden – 4,3 km
A circular trail that passes the site where a croft stood as early as the 1700s.
Orshöjdsleden – 6,4 km
Runs through the national park to the southern entrance and passes the highest point in the area, Orshöjden.
The main entrance is located at Råbocken where you will find parking, toilets, information boards and an accessible trail. Guided tours can be booked through Dalslandsguiderna.
Lakes, paddling and fishing
Dalsland is known for its many lakes and waterways. Around Ed there are beautiful swimming spots, walking paths and plenty of opportunities for excursions by the water. In winter the lakes often freeze, creating wonderful environments for ice skating, skiing and ice fishing.
Dalslands canal is one of Europe’s most beautiful waterways with 253 kilometres of navigable waterway and 31 locks. Here you can paddle a canoe or travel with the canal’s passenger boats. One of the area’s most famous attractions is the aqueduct in Håverud where the waterway, railway and road meet.
Paddling is a wonderful way to experience the landscape from the water. Around Ed there are several smaller lakes with simple launch sites. If you want to paddle in Stora Le, Eds båthamn is a good starting point. This is also where Canodal is located, where you can rent canoes and equipment for overnight trips. Eds båthamn is about one kilometre from Stationshuset.
For those who want to fish there are more than 400 lakes and waterways in Dals-Ed municipality. The lakes Lilla Le and Sågtjärn are within walking distance from Stationshuset. Fishing permits can be purchased via ifiske.se (opens in new tab).
Cycling
The area around Ed offers varied cycling through forests, open landscapes and along lakes. At Stationshuset you can store your bicycle in a locked storage room.
Several scenic cycling routes pass nearby. Unionsleden stretches between Moss in Norway and Karlstad and runs through beautiful nature close to Ed. Älgparken runt is an easier gravel route that takes you through a rolling landscape without steep hills and passes Dalslands Moose Ranch, a couple of kilometres from Stationshuset. For longer rides there is Dalslandsleden, a cycling route of about 360 kilometres that runs between Vänersborg and Ed.
Culture and events
Ed and its surroundings offer a vibrant cultural life with local crafts and several historic sites. Throughout the year markets, concerts, art walks and book days are arranged.
Annual events such as Eds Countryfest and Monsterrace attract many visitors.
At Dalslands Moose Ranch you can meet moose up close. At Eds mc- och motormuseum you can see more than 150 vintage motorcycles, mopeds and boat engines.
More excursions nearby
Halden
The Norwegian town of Halden is about one hour away by train. Here you can visit Fredrikstens fästning and experience Via Ferrata Haldenkanalen with Europe’s longest suspension bridge. In the area you will also find Brekke slussar, the highest lock system in northern Europe.
Fredrikstad and Hvaler
Fredrikstad with the district Gamlebyen and Hvaler nationalpark in an archipelago setting are pleasant day trips. The easiest way to travel here is by car in just over one hour.
