The Väderöarna Nature Reserve, together with Kosterhavet National Park, is one of Sweden’s most valuable marine areas. Shellfish fishing, hiking and relaxing in the sauna or hot tub are just some of the ways to experience it.

Today, the islands are part of the Natura 2000 network, where the warm, windy climate has created a rare blend of lush and rugged. Together with Kosterhavet, this is Sweden’s most biologically diverse marine area. Home to species found nowhere else in the country, including a living coral reef nourished by the salty, oxygen-rich Jutland current. The area is also considered one of Sweden’s top diving destinations.

The archipelago consists of two groups and a total of 365 islands and skerries. The main islands are Storö in the northwest, Väderöbod to the far southwest, and Hamnerö in the southeast. Though barren at first glance, the islands are full of life, typical for Bohuslän’s archipelago flora and fauna.

Their exposed position makes them a vital breeding ground for seabirds such as Arctic skuas, razorbills, shags and herring gulls. Harbour seals give birth on many of the islands, and one of the Bohus coast’s largest seal colonies is found here. Porpoises are sometimes spotted too.

A rich maritime history

These islands are steeped in centuries of nautical history. Seafarers have taken shelter here since the 1400s, and Väderöarna were once thought uninhabitable due to the harsh climate. Today, you can find old engravings, symbols, compass roses, dates and shields etched into the rocks. The pilot station began in the 1700s, with families living on the island until 1966. Today, there are no permanent residents.

Shellfish fishing

Shellfish from Bohuslän are legendary, fresh and delicious. On Väderöarna, you can join and learn about sustainable shellfish fishing for much of the year.

Take part in a langoustine fishing trip. Pull up the traps yourself, learn how the fishing works and enjoy a peaceful tour of the archipelago from the sea. A calm and atmospheric experience for foodies and nature lovers alike.
Season: March to late September

Crab fishing is a fun, relaxed activity for curious kids and adults. String, bucket and bait is available to borrow, and a good spot by the jetty is all you need. The crabs are released afterwards. A great way to discover marine life. Season: March to late September

Join a traditional lobster fishing tour with experienced fishers. Head out in a small boat, pull up the pots and learn the techniques. Your catch is then cooked on the jetty and served as part of a seafood dinner.
Season: Late September to end of November

Hiking

Hiking on Väderöarna offers peace, sea views and history. A 2.5 km marked trail circles the main island, a scenic loop taking about 45 minutes at an easy pace. You’ll pass open cliffs, small bays and panoramic sea views. Along the way, discover historic spots like “The Church,” believed to have been a prayer site for sailors, and “The Cave,” a leafy glade offering quiet respite in the middle of the rugged terrain. The trail is suitable for adults and children but good shoes are recommended. Dogs are welcome on a leash. You can also try geocaching, a fun way to explore the island.

Breathtaking views from the pilot lookout

The lookout tower is a unique tribute to Väderöarna’s maritime and pilot history, and an important part of Sweden’s cultural heritage. Climb to the top for a spectacular 360-degree view of the Västerhavet, the cliffs and the shipping lanes. Open daily in summer and more occasionally the rest of the year. It’s open to visitors when the flag is raised.

Sauna and hot tub

Nestled among the cliffs with open views of the Västerhavet, the wood-fired granite sauna and hot tub offer peaceful moments in steaming warmth, crisp sea air and dramatic views. The sea is always there for a refreshing dip.

The hot tubs are in use from late August to mid-June. In summer, when the sun warms the rocks and the sea is calm, they are closed. Sauna and hot tub must be pre-booked. Contact the hotel for prices and reservations.

Boat tour

Join a calm boat tour among the cliffs and quiet coves of the archipelago. A great way to experience more of the landscape, with chances to spot seals and seabirds. The tour lasts about 1 hour and suits adults and children alike. Pre-booking is required.
