Beyond Visby’s medieval city wall, Gotland’s unique landscape unfolds – an open and varied landscape offering everything from rugged limestone cliffs to soft coastal meadows. Here, you’ll discover a different side of the island, far from the pulse of the city.
On the eastern side of Gotland lies Närsholmen, an area characterised by wide-open views, grazing animals and the ever-present sea. Here, you are welcomed by a peaceful and authentic environment, perfect for relaxing in nature. The area is also home to STF Närsholmen Fyr & Logi for those wishing to stay overnight and fully embrace the tranquillity.
A trip to Fårö is almost a must. This small island north of Gotland offers some of Sweden’s most iconic natural landscapes, including dramatic sea stack fields such as Langhammars and long white sandy beaches like Sudersand. The scenery feels both rugged and poetic at the same time.
If you want to experience something truly unique, take the boat to Stora Karlsö. This island off Gotland’s west coast is a nature reserve rich in birdlife and striking cliffs. During summer, thousands of seabirds nest here, and the island offers a peaceful and almost timeless atmosphere.
For those seeking peace and quiet, Hall-Hangvar Nature Reserve and the cliff coast are excellent choices. Here, you can hike along high cliffs overlooking the sea, often in complete silence. The landscape is dramatic yet calming, with wind-swept trees and open views.
Hikers may also enjoy the stretch between Ekeviken and Lauters. This scenic hike offers varied terrain, coastal trails and beautiful viewpoints – a perfect excursion to experience Gotland’s nature up close.
