Choose the right hiking shoes
Before you set off on an adventure, it's wise to have the right hiking shoes for the purpose. Your shoes need to support both your weight and your gear. Sometimes sturdy hiking boots are the right choice, but at other times trail running shoes might be sufficient. The most important thing is that your shoes match the type of hike you are planning.
How to choose hiking shoes
First, consider the environments in which you will be hiking. The Swedish mountain areas impose different demands on shoes compared to hiking in warmer climates. Another thing to keep in mind is the length of your hikes. If you have a heavy backpack packed for a multi-day trip, you will need sturdy, more shock-absorbing hiking boots compared to if you are only carrying gear for a day hike. Remember not to rush when trying on different shoes in the store.
Hiking shoes or hiking boots?
Hiking boots with higher shafts are suitable for rugged and wet terrain, or if you are carrying a heavy backpack. They are, for example, perfect for many mountain hikers. Low or mid-height shaft hiking shoes are good if you are walking along well-maintained trails or with lighter loads on your back. In such cases, you don’t need as much ankle support. The advantage of low hiking shoes is primarily that they breathe better and are lighter. Whether you choose shoes or boots, they should provide support and grip, wick away moisture, and ventilate during warm summer days or long outings.
Right size, fit and support
The size of your hiking shoes is important, and it’s crucial not to get fixated on the number on the box. You need at least one centimeter of space in front of your longest toe when wearing socks. Make sure the shoes provide proper ankle and heel grip to prevent chafing. The shoes should also have a good fit and wrap around the foot so that your foot muscles can relax. Naturally, the shoes must also provide arch support. Some brands make shoes that are slightly wider, while others are narrower. Look around to find the right shoe for your foot. With a molded insole, you can shape the shoe or boot to fit you perfectly.
Shoe construction and sole
It is also important that the shoe sole does its job. The sole of a hiking boot should be flexible, stable, and have a rugged tread pattern that provides grip on loose, soft, and wet surfaces. You should not feel sharp stones through the sole, and your foot should not have to work unnecessarily on rough terrain.
If you frequently hike in off-trail terrain, it is beneficial for the shoes to have a low profile, meaning that the heel is close to the ground. This reduces the risk of stepping awkwardly and spraining your ankle.
Leather hiking boots
Leather is perhaps the most common material in hiking boots. Leather boots can last for years if you clean off dirt and apply leather conditioner. Additionally, they can mold slightly to the shape of your foot. Extra durable boots often have an extended rubber rand where the boots are most exposed to wear.

Break in hiking shoes and wear double socks
Hiking shoes need to be properly broken in before you embark on a longer hike. This helps you avoid unnecessary issues like blisters and pressure points, which can easily ruin even the most pleasant hiking day. Also, remember that the choice of socks is important for comfort. Cotton is not suitable for hiking; quality socks made of wool or synthetic materials are preferable. Always wear double layers to prevent chafing – a thin wool sock closest to the foot and then a pair of regular socks. Avoid socks with seams or edges that can cause irritation.
