6 sustainable hiking tips

Many people have discovered that hiking is a great way to explore Sweden. More and more are heading out onto forest trails and mountain landscapes, in national parks and coastal meadows across the country. We’ve put together six tips on how to hike more sustainably.

1. Stay on boardwalks

Boardwalks not only keep your feet dry – they also protect the ground. Use them, even if they may be in poor condition.

2. Wash dishes on land

Collect water instead of washing directly in lakes, the sea or streams. If you use detergent, make sure it is biodegradable. Pour the dishwater onto the ground so that fewer chemicals and residues end up in our waterways.

3. Take care of your toilet paper

Toilet paper does break down – but it takes time, and no one wants to see it along the trail. And skip the wet wipes!

4. Show respect

Animals become stressed when we get too close – from reindeer to small birds. Keep a good distance and move calmly.

5. Take it back with you

Don’t bring anything you’re not willing to carry back home. Leave no litter or leftovers behind.

6. Light fires with care

Be careful when making a fire in nature. Choose a spot where it won’t spread or damage the environment – preferably where a fire pit already exists. Never light a fire on bare rock, and always make sure it is fully extinguished and cleaned up afterwards. Check whether fire bans are in place where you are, as special rules may apply in national parks and nature reserves.
