Current snow conditions in the mountains

8 April 2025

Snow conditions in the mountains are currently variable. In several areas, the snow cover is thin or uneven, which can make nordic backcountry skiing difficult. This primarily affects the mountain regions around Helags, Vålådalen, Lunndörren, Anaris, and Oviken mountains, as well as Sonfjället. Below you’ll find the current snow conditions in the areas where STF has mountain cabins and mountain stations:

Jämtland Triangle

There is currently plenty of snow, and skiing between Storulvån, Sylarna, and Blåhammaren is not a problem.

Anaris

Snow conditions are generally poor here, both at the cabin site and along the trails. The mountain lake closest to the cabin is ice-free. However, it is still possible to ski across the remaining snow patches.

Lunndörren

The first few kilometers from Vålådalen have the best snow conditions. There is bare ground at the start (see image), and on the plateau you should be prepared to carry your skis. From Lunndörren to Vålåstugan, snow conditions are poor, and the cabin hosts do not recommend skiing with a pulk. The trail toward Anaris is not recommended due to ice and rocky terrain.

Vålåstugan

There are good snow conditions near Vålåstugan and along the trails toward Helags and Ljungdalen. Skiing with a pulk toward Lunndörren is not recommended. The trails toward Vålådalen and Stensdalen have good snow coverage on the mountain, but conditions are significantly poorer in the forested sections.

Stensdalen

From Vålådalen, you can either follow the winter trail across the Tvärån stream, which requires stepping into the water, or use the bridge along the summer trail. The Stensån river is completely open, so you will need to wade or head upstream to cross a smaller creek. From Stensdalen toward the Gåsen area, conditions are good for day tours.

Fältjägaren

Snow conditions are generally good. Toward Ramundberget, there is a short section where you’ll need to carry your skis. Toward Helags, it’s possible to zigzag your way through.

Rogen

On the way to Storrödtjärn, you will need to carry your skis for much of the route. Using a pulk is not recommended. Lake Rogen has a lot of bare ice with some snow patches where climbing skins may be helpful. Conditions are good toward Käringsjövallen.

Storrödtjärn

Snow conditions are fairly good but down to Lake Rogen and toward Hävlingen/Grövelsjön, you might need to zigzag between rocks on the mountain. In the birch forest, the snow conditions are stable.
