Find answers to the most frequently asked questions. hello

Here we provide the answers to the most commonly asked questions.

Starting December 16th STF is making changes in the categories of our membership. We have introduced a senior membership for members 75 years or older. This is in order to improve the circumstances for older members who might want to continue supporting the organisation even when they no longer use the benefits anymore.

At the same time, we are removing the membership for children younger than 16 years old. We want to continue making it easier for families with children to discover Sweden. But as a non-profit organisation we do not feel we have to require children to become members in order to do so. We will, of course, continue to inspire families with children to see more of Sweden, but without registering the children in our member database. Children up to the age of 15 will continue to stay at a member rate when travelling with an adult, senior or youth member.
If you already have the app and recently renewed your membership, the app will automatically update the information. If it does not, you might have an older version of the app. Please make sure to update to the latest version.

You can find more information on the app and some tips about the digital membership card here.
Many international members were frustrated about the extra postage fee they paid for receiving a magazine in Swedish. Therefore we now only offer international members the opportunity to read Turist digitally.
If you are a group of more than 10 persons you can make a group enquiry that can be found on the accommodations webpage here on the website.

As of November 15th 2022, STF no longer has a partnership with Hostelling International. Therefore members of an HI organisation cannot stay at STF’s accommodations at a reduced member price, unless you also become member of STF.

We regularly update our membership register via addressändring.se. If you notify your address change there, you do not need to change your address with us as well. We will receive the update and update the membership register before your move. If you do not use addressändring.se and want to ensure that our register is updated before your move, you can notify us of the change by logging in as a member here. Here you can also update your e-mail address.
On STF's website, you can log in as a member. Then you can access your benefits, read the magazine Turist digitally, change address and email address, and join a local branch. The member login can be found here and you log in with your membership number and postal code.
With the senior membership we want to give our older members an opportunity to continue to be STF-members – but to a lower rate. Many members over a certain age do not use the member offers and benefits to the same extent anymore. The member category for seniors has not been introduced based on the retirement age but based on when a number of our members stop using the benefits due to their age. This has of course been difficult to know since it is very individual and hard to make general assumptions.
STF wants to make it easier for families with children to discover Sweden. But as a non-profit organisation we do not feel we should require children to become members in order to do so. We will, of course, continue to inspire families with children to see more of Sweden, but without registering the children in our member database. Children up to the age of 15 will continue to stay at a member rate when travelling with an adult, senior or youth member.
If you have booked the accommodation while the partnership was still active (November 14th 2022 or earlier), the member discount still applies, and you should be able to stay at a reduced price.
If you have booked through HI while the partnership was still active (November 14th 2022 or earlier) you should still be able to stay at a reduced price. However, we have not been able to verify this with all of HI’s member organisations.
Very few members were using this membership benefit and did not rank it high as a reason of being a member of STF. Also, very few of our accommodations receive bookings through Hostelling International. When prioritising the resources we have within the organisation, we have chosen to prioritise other initiatives with more value to our members and guests.
You need your membership number to log in to the STFs app where you have access to your membership card.

You find your membership number on your physical membership card or on the latest bill. If you registered an e-mail address when you became a member you can fill out this form and we will e-mail you your membership number. If you have not registered an e-mailadress please contact our member service.

You can find more information on the app and some tips about the digital membership card here.

If you added STF’s cancellation insurance at the time of booking a guided tour or a package, you can cancel your stay according to our regular policy. Cancellation coverage applies in case of illness or serious incident and only in connection with the presentation of a doctor’s certificate. It applies only in the event of serious incident, acute illness or death occurring to you or to someone in your immediate family. Immediate family refers to a spouse/registered partner, cohabitant, child, parent or grandparent. You need to cancel the trip as soon as possible once you realise that you are not able to travel. The accommodation needs to be informed no later than 15.00 on the day of arrival. Without cancellation coverage, STF can not refund your cancellation on the basis of illness or being part of a high-risk group. We would recommend that you contact your insurance company for possible compensation.

No. There’s relatively good coverage in the vicinity of the mountain stations, but don’t count on being contactable at all times. The further into the mountains you venture, the worse the coverage becomes.
We recommend our guests to pre-book accommodation in our mountain cabins. Bookings and repayments must be made for the specific date and cabin. Click here to make an online booking. The number of beds available for pre-booking is limited and depends on the type of cabin/area, so they may be fully booked. When you pre-book your stay, you will receive a special discounted advance price, and you are guaranteed a bed as long as you arrive at the cabin no later than 18:00. Later arrivals are guaranteed an unspecified bed. You must be able to show your booking confirmation to the cabin host on arrival, either printed or digital. If you do not have the opportunity to make an advance booking, you can still pay on arrival. In that case you will be given an unspecified bed, which could mean a floor bed in the mountain cabin or a different indoor space. Unspecified beds are normally allocated after 18:00.

Kindly note that tent sites and day visits are not available for pre-booking and that service fees must be paid to the cabin host on arrival.

Read more about staying in our mountain cabins.
You can pay by debit och credit card at all our mountain stations.

Rogen-området: Rogen
Jämtland: Arådalen, Gåsen, Lunndörren, Stensdalen och Vålåstugan.

No. STF doesn’t run distance learning courses any longer. The Mountain Safety Council has brought out a standard course for guides. You can find these at the website www.fjallsaker.nu. You’ll also find there the Council’s contact details, for advice on who currently runs courses.
Yes, in our mountain cabins and stations but not at our hostels.

Many hostels have dog/pet friendly rooms and you can find this information on their websites (under "Facilities and Services"). Some hostels charge extra for the pet's accommodation. Pets are welcome free of charge at STF's mountain stations and mountain cabins, however these rooms are subject to availability.

Go to our website and search via our map function, click here.

Under "Accommodation" you can click "Change" and choose which service you want, in this case "Pets allowed". Then you will see the accommodations that welcome pets.

At some accommodations you pay extra for your pet's overnight stay, contact the accommodation directly if "pet friendly" rooms are not available while booking online.

Pets are welcome free of charge at STF's mountain stations. Keep in mind that there are only a limited number of rooms allowed for pets/dogs, so it is important that you book these in advance. When you book online you will see if these specific rooms are available or not. If no rooms allowed for pets/dog are available, please try another date or accommodation.

There are a limited number of pet friendly places with dogs in the mountain cabins. If the dog friendly room is full the dog can be offered a place eg. in the woodshed.
You don't have to be a member to stay at STF's accomodations, but it does make it cheaper to stay with us. The price for lodging you see at our web is the price for members. If you are not a member you can choose to pay an addition to price before you complete the booking. You can also become a member after you have completed the booking. You will show your membership card when you check in at the accommodation.  Read more about our membership.
See the website of your chosen accommodation for any child offers. Find accommodation on map
In many of our accommodations you can use a sleeping bag, provided you have a sheet and pillowcase with you. The host decides whether to allow this or not. Please contact the accommodation in advance to make be sure of what rules apply.

At our mountain stations and mountain cabins, we recommend that you bring your own bed sheet and pillowcase (at mountain stations these can also be rented on site) in addition to a sleeping bag, travel sheet or duvet cover. For your own hygiene and safety, you should be able to cover all your bedding.
Yes. Most of STF’s accommodations accept the most common debit and credit cards, such as VISA and Eurocard (not Diners and American Express). Places that do not accept card payments state this on their pages (under "Overview").

Some mountain cabins do not accept card payments. Please read more about payment at mountain cabins.
It is possible to cook in the guest kitchens that are available at all accommodations. However, some STF hotels do not have guest kitchens. To ensure that the hotel you want to stay at has a guest kitchen, please read the description for your chosen hotel. The guest kitchen is equipped so that you can cook and eat your food. You share the kitchen and dining area with other guests.
At most of four accommodations you have the option of staying in your own room. If you choose a bed in a dormitory, you should expect to share the room with other guests. At our mountain stations, all our dormitory beds can be booked. As far as possible we try to accommodate different parties in different rooms, but you are not guaranteed your own room unless you have made a booking. If you don’t want to share a room with other guests, we recommend that you make your booking for those dates or accommodations where single occupancy is available. At our mountain cabins beds can only be booked in a multi-bed room, where you will usually share the room with others.
Many of our accommodations have rooms with shower and toilet, as well as rooms where you share facilities with other guests. You will find information about the room types on each accommodations webpage. Our hotels always offer rooms with private shower and toilet.
We do recommend that you always pre-book your accommodation with us.

At our mountain stations, you can also book and pay for your accommodation on arrival, subject to availability. However, we can not guarantee a bed if you have not pre-booked. In an emergency we always offer roof over your head. All beds in our common rooms can be pre-booked. As far as possible we try to accommodate different parties in different rooms, but you are not guaranteed your own room unless you have made a booking. If you don’t want to share a room with other guests, we recommend that you make your booking for those dates or accommodations where single occupancy is available.

We also recommend our guests to pre-book accommodation in our mountain cabins. Bookings and repayments must be made for the specific date and cabin. Click here to make an online booking. The number of beds available for pre-booking is limited and depends on the type of cabin/area, so they may be fully booked. The season starts at midsummer and continues into September. High season is between about 20 July and 10 August. There are a lot of people in the cabins then, and in some places it can get a bit crowded. Winter season begins at New Year. Most mountain stations, however, open in February and remain open until the beginning of May. Mountain cabins open in late February/early March and are open until the beginning of May.
Yes - there’s nothing better! The water should be running and clear. You can even drink the lake water in the mountains.
No, you may not. It is, however, possible to purchase a fishing permit for a large number of lakes and stretches of water. Several of our mountain stations and mountain cabins sell these fishing permits. A county’s administrative committee (länsstyrelse) has information about its permitted waters.
The Nature Conservation Authority is responsible for the public pathway system. In Norrland’s county they’re maintained by the county’s administration committee (länsstyrelse). Upkeep of local pathways is the responsibility of a local-authority leader.
Yes. According to the Rights of Public Access dogs must be kept on a leash from 1 March-20 August. Animal life is at its most sensitive to disturbance just then from even the most peaceful pet dog. Outside these times you must keep close watch over your dog, so that it doesn’t scare the wildlife. Special rules apply, according to the Nature Conservation Act, when taking your dog into a national park area. These rules can be found on the website for the respective county’s administration committee (länsstyrelse).

Dogs are welcome free of charge at STF's mountain stations. Keep in mind that there are only a limited number of rooms allowed for pets/dogs, so it is important that you book these in advance. When you book online you will see if these specific rooms are available or not. If no rooms allowed for pets/dog are available, please try another date or accommodation.

Read more about hiking with dogs here.
Yes, of course! Make short trips of a varied nature so that they don’t get tired. It can take half a day before they’ve finished playing beside a stream - so take it slowly. A good idea with young children is to have a base (tent or mountain cabin) from which to make trips, so you don’t have to carry too much.
In the very far north of Sweden, north of the Arctic Circle. At Nuolja in Abisko you can see the midnight sun between 27 May and 18 July.
Yes, you can. If you choose to camp by one of STF’s mountain cabins or mountain stations there’s a service charge, for which you get access to the services the cabin or station provides. Read more here.
Our mountain cabins are located in scenic locations 10-25 km from each other, which is just a day trip for most people. Read more about each mountain cabin here and look at a map to get an idea of how far it is between the specific cabins you want to visit.
It is true that there are mosquitoes, but no more than you will find in the archipelago of Stockholm or in the woods in Skåne. There are more mosquitoes in late spring/early summer, in mountain birch forests and near bog areas. Later in the summer there are few mosquitoes - sometimes none! Up on the mountain where the wind almost always blows, there are next to no mosquitoes.
Yes. STF’s mountain stations and most cabins have a good range of provisions for sale. You will find more information about food in the mountain cabins right here.
Absolutely not. There are plenty of ways to enjoy Swedish mountain life without great hardship. Many people enjoy just walking or skiing in the vicinity of the mountain station or mountain cabin. Those planning to make longer excursions will, of course, feel better if they’re not completely out of shape.
You go first to Kebnekaise’s mountain station, 19 km from Nikkaluokta, a bus journey from Kiruna. Then you spend the night at the mountain station and set out with the STF guide to reach the summit. You ought to allow a couple of extra days - depending on the weather it might not be possible to make the trip some days. The hike to the summit is tough, but most people can make it with moderate effort.
Yes, but only in emergencies. There is a safety room in some mountain cabins and mountain stations without any road connection.
In the cabin you will find a payment slip that you can take home and use to pay for your stay. You can also pay the money into the BankGiro account BG 5313-0225. With the payment you should include your name, which cabin you stayed at, and the date of your stay.
