Nestled beside a mountain stream, not far from Abisko, lies this impressive cave system shaped by the forces of nature. We pack the car and drive a few kilometers before starting an easy hike of approximately 2 kilometers up to the cave entrance, Kåppashåla. Once there, we change into overalls, helmets, and headlamps before descending into the underground.

The cave system offers two entrances, we begin with the larger passage, where winding corridors alternate with open chambers and stunning formations. For the more adventurous, there is also an option to explore the second cave, which is more physically demanding with narrow passages, a short climbing section, and tunnels that require crawling.

This experience offers both curiosity and wonder, letting you discover a side of nature that few ever get to see and one you won’t soon forget!

Program

We meet at the entrance of Abisko Tourist Station at 10:00 AM and travel by minibus to Björkliden. From there, we hike approximately 2 kilometres along the stream to the cave entrance. Once there, we put on the necessary equipment and go through how to move and communicate safely inside the cave.

We begin by exploring the easier cave, where we get a feel for the different elements that may be encountered, such as narrow passages and a damp environment. After making our way through the first cave, we take a break for refreshments and to recharge our energy. For those who wish, we then continue into the second cave, which offers a more challenging experience.

When we emerge from the cave, we change into dry clothes and hike back along the stream to the vehicle. We conclude the tour at Abisko Tourist Station, where we expect to return at approximately 2:30 PM.

About the area

Abisko is located in northern Lapland, around 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, and is one of Sweden’s most accessible alpine mountain areas. Abisko National Park offers a well-developed trail system with clearly marked routes, making the area suitable for both shorter trips and longer hikes.

The Kungsleden trail passes through the area, heading south between Lapporten (Čuonjavággi) and Mount Nuolja. To the north of Abisko lies Lake Torneträsk, one of Scandinavia’s largest mountain lakes, contributing to open views and a varied landscape.

The area is known for excellent conditions for seeing the northern lights in winter and the midnight sun in summer. Visitors can follow marked trails independently or join guided tours, and equipment rental is available if needed.
