Sustainability

Grinda is located in a fragile natural environment, and the Wärdshus, hotel, and other businesses on the island are committed to preserving and enhancing its cultural and natural heritage. These values are an essential part of the guest experience and guide all aspects of the island’s operations, with great care taken to protect the unique environment of the Stockholm archipelago.

Here are a few examples of this ongoing work:

• Nature conservation. Each year, Grinda carries out two major conservation projects to restore and maintain the natural areas surrounding its facilities. The work is carried out in collaboration with nature conservation students from the Stockholm Maritime Academy, helping to preserve the island’s beautiful landscape for future generations. 
• Water self-sufficiency. Grinda has its own desalination plant, which produces fresh drinking water from the surrounding sea. This eliminates the need to transport bottled water to the island and ship empty bottles back to the mainland, significantly reducing both environmental impact and transport costs.
• Sustainable heating. Heating was previously powered primarily by oil, but has now been replaced by an energy-efficient heat pump. There are also plans to invest in solar panels to further reduce the island’s environmental footprint.
• Youth engagement.Grinda is committed to creating opportunities for young people to enter working life. Many employees are hired without previous work experience, with recruitment focusing on attitude and potential rather than experience. Continuous training and skills development are then provided to help employees grow in their roles.
• Archipelago preservation. The Stockholm archipelago has seen a long-term decline in its permanent population. Grinda is actively working to help reverse this trend by creating jobs and encouraging more people to live and work in the archipelago. A growing year-round community helps support essential services such as schools, transport, and infrastructure, contributing to a vibrant and sustainable future for the islands.
