Museums

At Bildmuseet, international contemporary art meets beautiful river views. Guitars – the Museum has one of the world’s largest collections of guitars. Väven is an interesting library and women’s history museum.

At Västerbottens museum in Gammlia, you can stroll among historic buildings and learn more about the region’s cultural heritage. If you are travelling with children, Curiosum is a science center with interactive experiments and fun activities.

Restaurants

Umeå offers a wide range of restaurants, pubs and cafés with flavours from around the world. In the cosy older part of the city where Hotel 1861 is located, you will find plenty of galleries, book cafés and charming small stops.

Nature experiences

If you are longing for an outing in nature, there is the riverside promenade along the Umeälven, the green Arboretum Norr with unusual trees, and Nydalasjön, perfect for swimming, paddling and walks. Umedalen’s sculpture park offers modern art in an open setting, and Tavelsjöberget provides magnificent views over forests and lakes.

Granö and STF Granö Beckasin is a well-known ecological destination offering accommodation in tree nests, cabins and hotel rooms, with a focus on sustainability and high quality. The area is a hub for nature tourism and has developed into an international meeting place for culture and Indigenous art.

Holmön is a popular excursion destination with a vibrant archipelago atmosphere and excellent hiking trails. A perfect combination is to first stay at Hotel 1861 and then visit STF Berguddens fyr, STF Holmöns Prästgård or STF Stora Fjäderägg in the outer archipelago of Norra Kvarken. City pulse mixed with salty sea air and archipelago life.

Just south of Umeå, you can visit the beautiful archipelago gem Norrbyskär. Take the ferry from the mainland and discover a historic island with a fascinating past. Norrbyskär is a popular summer destination with beautiful nature, historic buildings and a museum.

Visit the animals at Mickelbo gård and Älgens hus, where you can meet moose up close.

If you want to enjoy scenic views, a trip to Drakryggen with its dramatic landscape is recommended, as well as Isälvsleden for beautiful hiking, Tallbergsbroarna with sweeping views over the Umeälven, Balberget and Notvarpsbron – places that offer new perspectives on northern Swedish nature.
