Hotel 1861 is an affordable and charming hotel set in Umeå’s former prison building, centrally located in Umeå within walking distance of restaurants, shops and museums. A unique experience where history is present in every detail.

Hotel 1861 is known for its personal service and genuine atmosphere. Here, you step straight into a fascinating part of Umeå’s history – while staying close to the city’s restaurants, culture and nature experiences.

The former cells have been carefully converted into simple and functional guest rooms, where many original details have been preserved to maintain the historic atmosphere. Toilets and showers are located in the corridor and shared with other guests. Each morning, a simple breakfast is served in the shared dining room, where you can start your day and perhaps exchange tips with fellow visitors. If you prefer to prepare your own meals, there is a self-catering kitchen equipped with what you need during your stay.

The building also houses a small museum that tells the story of the property and life in the former prison.

SJ operates high-speed trains from Stockholm to Umeå, taking just over 6 hours. From Luleå to Umeå, the journey takes about 4 hours. It is within walking distance from Umeå Central Station to Hotel 1861.

Bus
Local bus departures can be found via Länstrafiken Västerbotten. If you are continuing to Holmön, search for buses from Umeå to Norrfjärden.

Boat
If you are travelling from Finland, ferries operate year-round between Vaasa and Umeå. The route is served by Wasaline.

Car
Umeå is located along the E4, and you will find Hotel 1861 centrally in Umeå along Strandvägen. Parking is available outside the hotel.
