Our sustainability promise to you

We know that our members and many others want to be able to discover Sweden in a sustainable way. Our goal is a Sweden where sustainable tourism is easy and inspiring. That's why all of our accommodations make a sustainability promise – a promise to you as a guest to work more sustainably.

The Swedish Tourist Association aims to be a driving force for sustainable tourism development in Sweden. We know that the sustainability work at our accommodations is an important issue for you as STF members. That’s why, at the end of 2016, we launched something we call the Sustainability Promise. It is a promise from each individual accommodation to you as a guest. At the end of 2019 we reached our goal that all active STF accommodations should have made the Sustainability Promise. Newly affiliated accommodations make the Sustainability Promise on an ongoing basis.

Our sustainability promise to you

  • We are engaged in society
  • We help you become a sustainable guest
  • We sort our waste
  • We take responsibility for energy consumption
  • We safeguard water as a resource
  • We contribute to a thriving local community and sustainable farmingWe use environmentally friendly products
  • We promote wellbeing and good public health
  • We are a responsible employer

About the promise

The promise consists of a number of sustainability areas that we see as important for running a sustainable accommodation. It covers everything from waste sorting and energy use to our contribution to a thriving local community and how we inspire you as a guest to live more sustainably. All parts must be met, but it is up to each accommodation to decide how. In this way we want to develop what is unique about each accommodation and make the most of all the commitment among our hosts, while creating consistency in our sustainability work. Meeting the promise should be adaptable to local conditions, so that it works for large and small accommodations alike across the country.

Eco-labels at STF

Many of STF’s accommodations are certified with an externally audited eco-label as a complement to our own Sustainability Promise. For just over twenty years, STF has worked with the international eco-label Green Key (opens in a new tab), which operates in over 90 countries. Green Key sets tough requirements on energy, water and waste, but also on social sustainability and on supporting the local community. Some of STF’s accommodations are certified with Svanen (the Nordic Swan), KRAV and Nature’s Best. You can find all eco-labelled accommodations by selecting the relevant label in our map search.
