The county museum of Jämtland can be described as three museums in one place: the open-air museum with animals, historic buildings and farming, the cultural history exhibitions of the county museum, and Nationalmuseum. At Jamtli you can experience history, art and cultural heritage environments all in one and the same place. Jamtli’s permanent exhibitions tell the story of the county in an underground landscape: Sami history, the Stone Age, the Viking Age, the Middle Ages and the farming society.
The permanent exhibitions also include the Överhogdal tapestries, the unique Viking Age textiles believed to depict the turning point between pagan and Christian times. Nationalmuseum Jamtli offers art experiences based on the collections of Nationalmuseum.
Jamtli has a rich program all year round – exhibitions, activities and events. It is easy to spend many hours here, full of the joy of discovery. For families with children, the summer’s Jamtli Historieland is a favorite, where children of all ages can play their way through history. In winter, the open-air museum turns into a fairytale place with snow-covered farmsteads and atmospheric events, with the Christmas market at Jamtli as one of the highlights.
In summer, the open-air museum comes alive as Jamtli Historieland, when actors portray life as it once was in the historic farmsteads. Travel through time, from 1785 to 1975, and meet people living the way they did back then, with everyday chores, joys and worries.
Östersund
The city center of Östersund is within comfortable walking distance, full of charming shops, cafés and restaurants. A visit to Lake Storsjön is almost a must – stroll along the waterfront promenade, take a dip on a warm summer’s day, or keep an eye out for the legendary Storsjö monster.
If you enjoy culture, there are art exhibitions, a cinema and a theater, and if you want to be active, there are cycle paths and hiking trails both in town and out toward the mountains. One particularly fine outing is to head up to the Frösö tower on Frösön, where a magnificent view opens up over the city, Lake Storsjön and the mountains in the distance.
A popular destination is Badhusparken with Surfbukten, a green oasis by Lake Storsjön with large playgrounds, plenty of room for a picnic and sometimes even ice cream for sale. In winter the park is transformed into Vinterparken, with a snow play area, ice rinks and ski tracks. Don’t miss Storsjöbadet either – an adventure pool with water slides, a children’s pool and a warm relaxation area for the whole family.
In winter, fine cross-country skiing tracks await, and in summer it is popular to rent a bike and explore leafy parks or head out on a boat trip. Whatever the season, Östersund and Jamtli have something for everyone – there is always something new to discover, for young and old alike.
