The area is an ideal starting point for hikes and ski tours in Padjelanta, the Akka massif, the Gränsleden trail and Sarek National Park. Below we share some of our favourite tips for enjoyable excursions and hikes.
Day trip ideas in the area
Follow the trail past the Sámi settlements in Änonjalme and Vaisaluokta to the jetty in Vaisaluokta, and return by evening boat. Don’t miss a visit to the small chapel in the Vaisaluokta settlement.
Walk the first part of the Gränsleden trail along the shore of Akkajaure. Once you reach higher ground, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views over the lake and the peaks of Padjelanta and Sarek. It’s about 20 km to the lake’s western end, but feel free to walk as far as you like and turn back whenever it suits you. If you’d like to rent a tent for an overnight stay, make sure to book at least one week in advance.
The Ritsem area is also home to many great fishing lakes. You can catch trout, Arctic char and whitefish year-round! Fishing permits are sold in the shop, where you’ll also find lures, lines, bait and other gear for both summer and winter fishing.
Shorter hikes
The “Little Loop” passes the telecom mast and climbs to a hilltop with beautiful views of the peaks across the lake. The walk is about 3 kilometres long, takes around an hour, and is suitable for anyone looking for an easy hike. You’ll start in a birch forest rich in flora, then continue up to the open heights where you’re rewarded with panoramic views.
…or walk along the road to the small chapel in Ritsem. Bring a picnic basket and a couple of logs and make a fire by the chapel. Enjoy the peace and quiet of nature.
Winter tips
In winter, crossing Akkajaure is a completely different experience than in summer. You can either travel by snowmobile across the frozen lake or put on skis and follow a well-marked trail over the ice. It’s important to stay on the trail, as ice conditions can vary. If you’d prefer to be transported by snowmobile, speak to the reception staff and they’ll point you in the right direction.
A little more than 10 km of easy skiing across the lake takes you to the Akka Mountain Cabin – a perfect starting point for further adventures into Sarek or Padjelanta for experienced skiers. For summit tour enthusiasts, the Akka massif awaits, or the more accessible Pålnotjåkkå.
