Söderfors Herrgård offers experiences in every season. During summer, in addition to hiking, you can swim, paddle and fish in the Dalälven River. In winter you can try ice fishing, go cross-country skiing on nearby trails or visit the local ski slope with a lift. Bicycles are available to borrow on site, and in summer, canoes can be rented. After a day outdoors, it is perfect to return to the sauna and enjoy a good dinner in the restaurant, with beautiful views over the river.
Hiking & nature
Söderfors is part of the Lower Dalälven River Landscape Biosphere Reserve, designated by UNESCO for its high natural and cultural values. Just outside the manor begins walking paths, jogging trails and small roads that lead straight into nature. The English Park with the Greek Temple is a popular excursion.
Less than five kilometres from Söderfors Herrgård lies the Bredforsen Nature Reserve, with river meadows, forests and rapids. The Gästrikeleden hiking trail passes through the area, offering both shorter loops and longer day stages along the Dalälven River. One highlight is the Hedesunda–Kågbo section (Gästrikeleden stage 15), which gives a beautiful impression of the Lower Dalälven landscape.
You can also choose a shorter walk from through the ironworks area and out towards the river, or plan a longer day hike that includes both the Gästrikeleden trail and Bredforsen. Maps and tips for suitable routes are available on site, for both leisurely walks and longer hikes.
Färnebofjärden National Park
A short drive (approx. 30 minutes) from Söderfors lies Färnebofjärden National Park, a perfect day trip offering an even broader view of the Dalälven’s beautiful landscapes. One of the river’s most fascinating gems, the park is where wide river expanses meet ancient forests, shoreline meadows and rich wildlife. Here you can walk along quiet trails, paddle between islands and inlets, or simply sit by the water and listen to the silence. Whether you come for birdwatching, nature photography or to experience the calm of the wilderness, Färnebofjärden invites both adventure and reflection – all year round.
The Dalälven River – paddle, swim, fish
The Dalälven River is a natural part of any stay at Söderfors Herrgård. During summer, the water invites paddling, swimming and fishing. In the calm of autumn, the river is perfect for peaceful walks along the shore, while winter brings activities such as ice fishing and cross-country skiing.
Culture & industrial heritage
Throughout the year, Söderfors Herrgård hosts a range of popular cultural events that bring extra life to the area. Enjoy intimate live music, themed evenings with local connections, lectures and small exhibitions highlighting the area’s cultural heritage. From time to time, guided heritage walks, historical tours and seasonal events linked to the manor’s long history are also arranged. The atmosphere – with salons, dining rooms and the English park as a backdrop – provides a beautiful setting for these experiences.
Söderfors Bruk is one of Sweden’s best-preserved historic ironworks environments. Here you will find former smiths’ quarters, ironworks streets and the anchor smithy, which today serves as a museum. In summer, guided tours and heritage walks are sometimes offered. Together with the church and the English park, the area forms a cultural environment that is easy to fall in love with.
