FAVOURITE HAUNTS OF THE STAFF

Michelle’s tips: Monteliusvägen – a nice walk at any time of the year around the heights of Mariaberget, with a beautiful view over Riddarholmen and the Old Town.
Fotografiska – a privately owned museum and rendezvous for modern photography. It also serves tasty seasonal food that can be enjoyed with a view of Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen!

Sandra’s tips: Ivar Los park – bring dinner, coffee or other treats and enjoy the wonderful view. It is especially beautiful at sunset!

Mattis’ tips: Vinterviken is a lush oasis by Lake Mälaren. Visit the lovely garden café, walk along the water and go for a swim. Mosebacke/Södra teatern is the classic cultural stage on Söder. A fantastic place for those who like live concerts, nightlife or want to enjoy the beautiful view of Stockholm in the company of good friends.

SHOPPING IN STOCKHOLM

Drottninggatan
Stockholm’s long shopping street with a multitude of shops running straight through the city centre, from the Old Town and past Sergels torg to Observatorielunden. Most of the street is pedestrianised. This is also where the big department store Åhléns can be found.

Norrmalmstorg
The area around Norrmalmstorg is home to the classic grand department store NK, the newly built shopping centre MOOD, which combines shopping with restaurants and a bar, as well as a number of luxurious shops along the elegant pedestrian street Biblioteksgatan.

Old Town
The medieval Old Town is perhaps best known for its many souvenir shops. However, away from Västerlånggatan there are also many smaller shops selling arts and crafts and small-scale fashion. Here you will also find galleries where it is sometimes possible to buy original art from the exhibitions.

Södermalm
Götgatan and Hornsgatan are the biggest shopping streets on Södermalm. The shopping centre Bruno on Götgatan is home to both established and innovative Swedish fashion. There are also many smaller shops and second-hand boutiques. If you are looking for vintage bargains, there is an interesting range at shops such as Emmaus Vintage at Slussen, Judits and Herr Judit on Hornsgatan, or Beyond Retro on Södermalm. The area south of Folkungagatan is, somewhat jokingly, called So-fo and is home to lots of shops and cafes.

RESTAURANTS AND CAFÉS

Bar & Bistro Chapman
Visit us here at HMS af Chapman! Bar & Bistro Chapman is open during the summer. Here we serve home-cooked Swedish classics that are best enjoyed with a cold drink, in the company of good friends with the soft lapping of the waves next to you.

Café Blom
A modern café at the Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design, just next to us on Skeppsholmen. They serve light lunches, cakes, coffee and artisanal drinks from local breweries. The bread and many other products are organic and made locally.

Restaurang Långa Raden
Restaurang Långa Raden is located in the garden of Hotel Skeppsholmen and serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, as well as brunch on weekends. The meals reflect Swedish culinary heritage and are prepared using seasonal produce.

B.A.R.
Blasieholmens akvarium och restaurang is one of Stockholm’s best restaurants for fish and everything else from the sea. It is centrally located on Blasieholmen, a short walk away.

PARKS / GREEN AREAS

Royal Djurgården
You can reach Djurgården in a couple of minutes from Skeppsholmen if you take the Djurgården Ferry. This green island was originally designated as a royal hunting ground and it is still largely a green area full of open fields, beech forests and exciting buildings. Beyond the large well-known museums, there is a network of beautiful walking paths as well as restaurants and cafés. It is a good idea to rent a Citybike and cycle around the island, for example via Djurgårdsbrunnskanalen or Blockhusudden, which are some of our favourites.

Vita bergen
Vitabergsparken, which this park is also known as, is a hilly green area in the eastern part of Södermalm. Large parts of it have been a cultural reserve since 1956, and here you can see some of the old wooden houses that were homes for workers on Södermalm in the impoverished Stockholm of the 19th century. Many come here for a picnic or to attend one of the many free events arranged by Parkteatern theatre during the summer months.

Rålambshovsparken
This is a popular park that is teeming with life in summer. The park is on Kungsholmen with a nice view over Riddarfjärden, Stockholm City Hall and the Old Town. You can come here to play beach volleyball, boules, football or rounders or to eat a nice picnic. Smedsuddsbadet can be found next to the park and is a popular spot where families with children in particular choose to come for sunbathing and swimming. The park is home to many events during the summer months, including Parkteatern, national day celebrations and outdoor cinema screenings. To get to Rålambshovsparken, it is nice to approach on foot along Norr Mälarstrand or over the bridge Västerbron from Södermalm.
