Smart waste packing for the Mountain cabin

Minimize the amount of waste and food scraps and help carry your trash back with you! Together, we can manage waste in the mountain cabins — and it all starts with you planning at home.

Tips for packing

Waste management in brief:

  1. Minimize the amount of waste and food scraps.
  2. Clean, compress, and sort all recyclables.
  3. Take your portable trash with you.

All waste collected in the cabins must be transported down from the mountain. This includes everything from food scraps and tin cans to snus and tampons. In some areas, household waste are allowed to get burned by the mountain cabins, but this practice is being phased out.

Heavier recyclable waste, such as metal and hard plastic, can be left in the cabin (rinsed, compressed, and sorted). It is stored until winter comes and then transported down by snowmobile when the snow is firm.

Portable waste made of soft plastic and paper is difficult to store. It is bulky, can smell bad, and attract vermin. You need to help with this type of trash by carrying it down from the mountain.

Food waste can be left in mountain cabins that have a compost. In other places, you should put it in your trash bag and carry it to a cabin/mountain station with a compost or down to a garbage place by a road. Avoid food scraps by not cooking more food than you can eat.
