At 21 kilometers, Råneälven is the largest forest river in Sweden, running through four municipalities. The river valley is divided into two different landscape types – the forest and the agricultural area. People have depended on the river valley for survival since time immemorial, and the traces in the landscape whisper their stories. Active forest reindeer husbandry, forestry, outdoors-oriented hunting, fishing and berry picking. The surroundings are wonderful, regardless of season.
Melderstein Herrgård is 12 kilometers from Råneå, a small community at the mouth of the river. Råneå has grocery stores, restaurants, a gas station and a bus station. The cities of Luleå, Boden and Kalix are about 50 kilometers away.
Melderstein Herrgård offers a special kind of harmony and atmosphere. We offer modern rooms with shower and toilets, a restaurant with space for 100 guests, full alcohol license, conference rooms, sauna and a private chapel with space for more than 100 guests. The lovely surroundings offer nice walking opportunities with relics of Melderstein’s ironworks history.
In the 17th century, a large ore deposit was discovered in Gällivare-Malmberget. The very same ore deposit is still being mined to this day. Officer Carl-Johan Thingwall was the first to be granted mining rights for Malmberget. In the 1740s, he formed a company with Jonas Meldercreutz and Abraham Steinholtz. Together they founded Melderstein Verk ironworks. The Melderstein name is a portmanteau of the names of the two main owners, Melder(creutz) and Stein(holtz). Melderstein is run by me, Katarina Thingvall, a direct descendant of Carl-Johan Thingwall. I took over the business from my father and uncle in 2018. They ran Melderstein together for 25 years. I now live with my family at the manor. Together we keep the history of the Thingvall family at Melderstein alive.
The ironworks era lasted until 1892, after which Melderstein Herrgård was run, among other things, as a manor house, school home and as a leisure farm by the Swedish Mission Association. Melderstein Herrgård was bought back by the Thingvall family in 1995. We have done extensive renovation work and refurbishment of the old mansion and the surrounding buildings.
