Abisko – Midnight sun hike

During the polar days, the sun never sets, and the midnight sun bathes the landscape in a golden glow during the night. We take the cable car up the mountain then hike for two kilometers to the summit of Nuolja, and enjoy nature’s breathtaking beauty.

The experience begins in the cable car, a serene evening ride that slowly and quietly takes you up the mountain. From the top of the chairlift, we continues on foot to reach Nuolja’s summit. The hike is taken at a relaxed pace, with several stops along the way as the guide shares fascinating stories about Abisko’s history and unique environment.

At the summit, we enjoy sparkling wine, snacks, and – weather permitting – the golden glow of the midnight sun that never dips below the horizon. It’s a magical moment where the sky and mountains blend seamlessly into a scene that can only be experienced here, north of the Arctic Circle. Shortly after midnight, we begin our descent back to the chairlift, where the tour concludes. You can choose to take the lift back down or linger a while longer to soak in the atmosphere.

Program

We meet at 9:30 PM at the entrance to Abisko Tourist Station. From there, we walk together to the base station of the chairlift. The chairlift consists of two-seat chairs, and during the peaceful ride up the mountain, we experience the sun slowly sinking toward the horizon, casting its soft light across the Abisko Alps and the iconic Lapporten valley.

Once everyone has arrived at the top station, we continue together to the summit of Mount Nuolja. Here, we enjoy the evening’s spectacular display of light, accompanied by tasty refreshments and fascinating stories about the history of Abisko and its surrounding landscape.

After midnight, we hike back to the chairlift’s upper station, where the guided tour concludes. From here, you may choose either to head back down immediately or stay a while longer to enjoy the surroundings. The last chairlift down the mountain departs at 1:30 AM.

The programme may be changed due to weather conditions, snow conditions, or other unforeseen circumstances.

About the area

Abisko is located in northern Lapland, around 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, and is one of Sweden’s most accessible alpine mountain areas. Abisko National Park offers a well-developed trail system with clearly marked routes, making the area suitable for both shorter trips and longer hikes.

The Kungsleden trail passes through the area, heading south between Lapporten (Čuonjavággi) and Mount Nuolja. To the north of Abisko lies Lake Torneträsk, one of Scandinavia’s largest mountain lakes, contributing to open views and a varied landscape.

The area is known for excellent conditions for seeing the northern lights in winter and the midnight sun in summer. Visitors can follow marked trails independently or join guided tours, and equipment rental is available if needed.
