Kungsleden Vakkotavare – Kebnekaise

The Kungsleden is one of the world’s most famous hiking trails. For many, the northern section is an obvious choice, here we offer a new alternative. Starting in Vakkotavare, with the compass needle pointing north, we set off towards STF Kebnekaise.

On this route, you’ll encounter a varied and magnificent landscape filled with contrasts. We hike through quiet valleys, alongside mirror-like mountain lakes, and ascend slopes that offer breathtaking views over the roof of Sweden – the Kebnekaise massif. Along the way, we stay in four different mountain huts before reaching our destination at the Kebnekaise Mountain Station.
This is the perfect option for you who have already explored the northern section of the Kungsleden or for those seeking a slightly more relaxed hike with shorter daily stages and more time to enjoy the grandeur of the mountains then the northern trail.

On the final day, you’ll hike the last 19 km on your own on a well-marked trail that is easy to navigate, through the beautiful Láddjuvággi valley, to Nikkaluokta.

Program

The arrangement begins around lunchtime on the arrival day in Vakkotavaare and ends after breakfast at Kebnekaise Mountain Station.

Before your trip: You can take a direct bus from Gällivare to Vakkotavaare on the day of arrival, or book an extra night beforehand at Vakkotavaare Mountain Cabin or Saltoluokta Mountain Station, where you can also book dinner the evening before and breakfast before departure to Vakkotavaare. Bus tickets must be booked in advance!

Programme:

Day 1 – Vakkotavaare – Teusajaure
We gather at Vakkotavaare Mountain Cabin after the bus from Gällivare has arrived, which according to the timetable is at 11:45 AM. We enjoy lunch together and go through both equipment and the programme before setting off towards our first overnight cabin, Teusajaure, 14 km away. Just before reaching the cabin, a boat transfer across the lake awaits. We need to catch the afternoon boat departing at either 5:15 PM or 6:15 PM to cross the water.

Day 2 – Teusajaure – Kaitumjaure
This day offers a shorter hike of approximately 9 kilometres. The route begins with a steeper ascent of about 300 metres in elevation over a mountain pass before the trail slopes down towards the Kaitum cabins. Here, we enjoy a calmer day with time to appreciate the scenery and peaceful mountain environment, perhaps with a relaxing sauna or a swim in the stream by Kaitumjaure.

Day 3 – Kaitumjaure – Singi
Today’s stage is 13 kilometres through relatively easy terrain. We follow the Tjäktjajåkka stream as it winds its way between the surrounding mountain peaks all the way to the Singi cabins. This section offers magnificent views of mountain valleys and the dramatic surrounding landscape.

Day 4 – Singi – Kebnekaise Mountain Station
We turn east and follow the trail into the beautiful Ladtjovagge valley. After today’s 14-kilometre hike, which includes an ascent of 150 metres followed by a descent of 150 metres, we arrive at STF Kebnekaise Mountain Station. Here, a well-deserved shower, sauna, and delicious dinner await – the perfect ending to the day’s adventure.

Day 5 – End of the tour at Kebnekaise Mountain Station
The arrangement ends after breakfast at Kebnekaise Mountain Station. Here, you may choose to book additional nights to further explore the area around the Kebnekaise massif. If you would like to take the opportunity to attempt the South Peak summit or hike to the Tarfala Research Station, you can check out the guided day tours available on the website.

If you choose to begin your journey home on this day, you continue independently for the final 19 kilometres down from the mountains, through the mountain birch forest and onwards to Nikkaluokta. If you would like to shorten the hike, there is an option to take a 6-kilometre boat ride across Lake Laddjujavri, giving you an extra break and a chance to enjoy the surrounding views.

Join us and experience the beauty of the mountains day by day – an unforgettable journey through some of Sweden’s most spectacular landscapes!

The programme may be changed due to current weather or snow conditions, or other unforeseen events.

About the area

The Kebnekaise area in the Kiruna mountains is Sweden’s highest mountain region and the starting point for ascents of Kebnekaise. The landscape is characterised by high alpine terrain with glaciers, steep peaks and wide valleys.

There is an extensive trail system here, ranging from easier day trips to more demanding alpine routes. Summit tours require careful planning and proper equipment, while there are also more accessible options in the surrounding area.

The area is most commonly reached by hiking from Nikkaluokta and is part of both the northern Kungsleden trail and the Dag Hammarskjöld Trail.

Booking conditions

You can cancel up to 30 days before arrival. After that, no refund will be issued. If the arrangement does not reach the minimum number of participants 30 days before it takes place, it may be cancelled.
